Headlines from Democracy Now

“Doctors in Rafah are warning Israel’s seizing of the border crossing and its intensifying attacks on eastern Rafah could lead to thousands of more deaths.”

@alkeddie Wait, what?

I’d have thought it was the opposite. He used the Israeli military’s genocide of civilians to REMIND people of the horrors of the holocaust.

The wholesale murder of civilian women and children can never be excused by past history, no matter how atrocious.

the thing that’s both and about home heating systems is that the heat and/or cooling only works in 2 degrees increments

kmmfoo,
@kmmfoo@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

if you set heat to 68 it will let the temp fall to 67 before it heats you to 69; if you set cool to 72 it will let the temp rise to 73 before it kicks in and cools you to 71.

this is a weird thought in 2024, considering that i left college in 1974 (50 years ago) but, afaik, my grandfather gave me a $5,000 insurance policy to offset my college costs, and i have no idea whether that money was ever released.

how would someone check something like that?

also: how many minutes of college would $5,000 cover these days?

also: assuming i gave money for my grandchildren to attend college, what’s your sense about how much that would help?

not a lot, I’m guessing.

IRISH: [is starving]

CHOCTAW: Aye. Bro, heard u have a colonizer problem.

IRISH: So hungry. No potatoes.

CHOCTAW: Yeh, those are Incan foods actually, but hey. Here's a couple hundred bucks we scraped together. Hope it helps bro.

IRISH: Didn't you just walk the trail of tears?

CHOCTAW: Aye, bro, so that's all we could afford. Sorry it's not much. Fuckin colonizers, right?

IRISH: Fuckin colonizers, man. Besties?

CHOCTAW: Besties.

@Toastie WOW! That’s amazing.

People of Irish heritage who emigrated to America and took part in the colonizing should probably take no solace from it, but still: it is amazing.

The descendants of the people who stayed in Ireland through and after the famine should feel honored to have such benefactors.

The hubs was wondering why we stopped getting merit badges now that we are grownups, so he made himself some.

kmmfoo,
@kmmfoo@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@RickiTarr
obsolete skills that should have had merit badges:

  • setting a VCR timer
  • rewinding VHS tapes and returning them on time
  • combining partial downloads into a complete porn movie
  • using a slide rule
  • using an abacus
  • re-tweeting
  • sub-tweeting

there are also a LOT of obscure CURRENT things that still need merit badges.

Remote employees get 273 min of uninterrupted work each day vs office-bound colleagues’ 223 min. Free from office distractions of impromptu meetings and ambient noise, remote work offers a more conducive environment for deep concentration. https://thehill.com/opinion/technology/4443825-telework-produces-a-22-percent-increase-in-employees-productive-work-time/

kmmfoo,
@kmmfoo@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@amydiehl in my life, remote work has proven both essential and beneficial. but for new employees just starting out in the work-world, i worry that there might not be enough acclimatization and socialization of the work ethic.

This California Senate debate is pretty interesting and I’m sure whichever Democrat ends up winning will do an excellent job. Steve Garvey, however, has so far shared that government shouldn’t administer health care (no Medicare votes from him then) and that he thinks most things can be solved by funding the police more.

Also, he has unreleased policy plans coming “tomorrow”. LOL.

And he’s boring AF.

kmmfoo,
@kmmfoo@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@TonyStark i’ve been so annoyed by the fundraising appeals from these folks, asking me to fund their attacks on other dems that i also admire.

totally prefer to reserve donations until one of them is fighting a real enemy.

“if it was important, you would have remembered it.” And “if you cared, you would have remembered.“

Neither of these claims have any basis in reality. Importance, and caring have no correlation to whether a memory is formed.

These sentences only serve to gaslight people about a chemical, process that they cannot control.

Please spread this knowledge.

Please stop gaslighting people with memory issues.
