Yeah, Apple has had a few advertising missteps in the past ("wHatZ uH cOmpUTer???), but this 'Crush' commercial is one of the darkest mistakes I think they've ever made. It feels like the intro to Fallout style dystopian story.
A far cry from the optimism of the 1984 commercial, Apple has become what they once rallied against...

@adingbatponder It's grim. The notion of "destroying" all artistic tools and training is a tone deaf comment from the company right now.
Apple seems unable to read the room. They're under increased scrutiny for anti-competitive business practices, and they're desperate to assert they have an AI strategy, as AI is facing increased consumer scrutiny.
As a commercial (for a product that has been slipping in sales for the last couple years) it's a horrible look for the product.

Retrospective from a month with the 11 Ultra:

I'm now officially a fan of the Zenfone. It hits a certain sweet spot for me between the headphone jack, UI, camera, and battery life. It's the direction should have gone.

I don't like the larger size more than the size of the 9/10, but it is roughly the same size of my previous Samsung Galaxy Plus, so I can definitely live with it.

@vwbusguy It's really a shame more companies didn't fight the monetization of removing the headphone jack. Where we end up with a handful of entry level phones alongside Sony and Asus.
Everyone else tried to ride Apple's strategy of forcing more Bluetooth audio accessory sales.
A company coming out today, AHEAD of the EU mandate for making battery repairs easier, could make a big impression advertising features like swap-able batteries, SD card storage expansion, and headphone jacks.

@vwbusguy It's so frustrating.
I'm no marketing genius, but I feel a company like Asus or Sony could have become the "King of the Niche" by actively pushing back against that trend in marketing. It worked CRAZY well for Samsung during the S10 era, and sales of Galaxy phones fell off a cliff on the S20 series, after Samsung copied everything they used to make fun of Apple for doing.

Yup. Digging that Bay Blue on the Pixel 8A.
Looks like we have a decent mid-ranger for North America. A LOT of the perks of owning the nicer Pixel 8, but at a lower price and the compromises don't seem extreme.
Should be a great daily communicator device.

Yeesh. Apple revenue is down all around. https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/05/apple-reports-second-quarter-results/

iPhoneand iPad saw drops. Accessory and "other" products (which includes Apple's mixed reality headset) also slipped even though this is the quarter that saw the launch of their headset.

Mac saw a small nudge up, but the only division seeing healthy gains was "Services" like Apple TV and iCloud. I believe that includes ads (please correct me if I have that wrong).

About 4% down year over year, but it's ok because dividends are up, and the company is authorizing $110 BILLION in stock repurchasing...

@thinker from a scifi perspective, I think we see the evolution of the phone as a lump of compute power that enables a better personal area network of other gadgets.

But from a corporate profit generating perspective, I'm not sure anything in the near term will show the kind of growth smartphones had.

We've spent the last decade giving Apple an unlimited runway of speculation and hype to bring a face computer to market.

Instead of doing a better job earnestly and fairly covering the tech along the way, properly educating consumers on what these things can do, now even Vision Pro can't live up to the media's imagined narrative of Apple.

Apple did nothing to earn a DECADE of media support for XR products, but think of all the projects that were criticized for not living up to some kind of imaginary Sci-Fi standard.

"Wait for gen 2 or gen 3 instead!"

Techies expect everyone else to lift off like a helicopter, but Apple gets UNLIMITED runway...

@ImmersiveMatthew Right. It's just helpful to know as I start a conversation if you did watch it or not. The tone of your comment felt like it was trying to correct something I've said, when literally the whole point of the video is to point out the media hyping Apple up.

Where I also say in the video, up until the keynote for their mixed reality headset, none of this hype was really Apple's fault.
