Apple was never going to "save" VR.
We've spent the last decade giving Apple an unlimited runway of speculation and hype to bring a face computer to market.

https://somegadgetguy.com/b/3si

Instead of doing a better job earnestly and fairly covering the tech along the way, properly educating consumers on what these things can do, now even Vision Pro can't live up to the media's imagined narrative of Apple.

Apple did nothing to earn a DECADE of media support for XR products, but think of all the projects that were criticized for not living up to some kind of imaginary Sci-Fi standard.

"Wait for gen 2 or gen 3 instead!"

Techies expect everyone else to lift off like a helicopter, but Apple gets UNLIMITED runway...

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@mropret The modern era of Apple reeks of the idea that they break standards and interoperability, to sell a proprietary solution, and make their competitors look bad.

Microsoft is adding new “recommendations” to your Start Menu. Basically, we’re getting more ads in Windows 11. Thankfully it’s pretty easy to disable this new “feature” in your settings.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X Review!

https://somegadgetguy.com/2024/04/19/beyerdynamic-dt-770-pro-x-a-fresh-twist-on-a-classic-studio-headphone/

I’ve used DT 770’s for YEARS now in my professional career, and it makes me nervous when a company says they’re going to update a classic piece of studio recording hardware. Using the new 770 Pro X for a couple weeks now, I have a LOT of thoughts.

Infinix makes some great bang-for-buck smartphones, and the Note 40 Pro+ has a fresh new look!
Have we seen this design before though?
Let’s check it out!

@Da_Gut I got into the habit of keyboard shortcuts and macros with windows 8, and I just stuck with that.

Oh I have the Pixel 8 Pro. That visor occupies a LOT of space in the top third, and then immediately below it there are the wireless charging coils.
When we could offset a smaller camera sensor to the upper corner, we still had room for a big battery and a fingerprint sensor (and on the smaller pixel 5) wireless charging.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I still prefer the old LG layout for power button and controls. It's just unfortunate that we dont have a simple number metric to discuss ergonomics like we can dump big numbers on other marketing spec sheets.

Recently I discovered that on Pixel phones you can tap the back of the phone twice to bring down the notification bar. However, this is so clunky and barely works.

What will it take for Google to just bring back the rear fingerprint reader with the ability to swipe down on that for notifications?

They took something useful and well liked, for what? Software that barely works, is slower and is objectively worse than the option that worked?

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@Keionys Sadly been kinda the way of smartphones for a while.
For the rear fingerprint, it seems in part, we lost that as cameras got bigger and more complicated. None of the replacements have been as good, but I generally prefer the power button reader over in-display.
Sadly, the functionality of a rear sensor and gestures can't really be replaced.

"the bet that everyone involved has made is that it doesn't really matter whether [AI] works, which is sort of the same thing as saying that the people being pushed into using it don't really matter, either."

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@melikhovo
One of the more heartbreaking stories I've seen was from a technical writer doing product documentation. Most of their department was laid off, and the few people left basically just copy edited the AI writing.
They described how much effort they put into their work, and that apparently that was all wasted effort. The AI content was "good enough", even though it was barely serviceable before being edited by a person.
Just seems like one of the worst ways to be shown how little your employer really thinks of you and your work...

ISPs FINALLY need to disclose all costs to consumers. Windows is adding MORE ads to the Start Menu. Adobe's "ethical" AI isn't THAT ethical. Google says goodbye to One VPN, but gives magic editor to ALL phones.
And it seems NO ONE wants Twitter's blue check these days.
