Oklahoma rolling out the Christmas spirit this year

…by outlawing homelessness

Board of City Commissioners in Shawnee passed an ordinance prohibiting sleeping outdoors as well as sitting or lying down in the right-of-way

It passed in a 6-1 vote

“God bless us, every-one”

ParanoidAndr0id,

@flexghost wow! This is par for the course for that part of the county but it's just crazy seeing the town I grew up in garnering this kind of attention. It's sad that it's come to this, but ironically this southern Baptist strong hold is what caused me to become atheist. I'm not trying to say anything specific, just my observations.

@flexghost
Then can the homeless sue the city for not giving them homes? There are literally more homes than homeless.

We need to make a law that it's illegal for a landlord to refuse someone to live in an unoccupied residence and it's illegal to evict someone if they can't get an alternative residence.

You know, since they want to pull this bs.

stooovie,
@stooovie@mas.to avatar

@Cymphoni_Fantastique @flexghost that's next to impossible to do for anyone homeless

Truth4ever,

@flexghost Republicans have a nack for twisting facts, the truth and even the Gospel of Christ to promote their right Wing Republican ideology. The parable of the Good Samaritan, Luke 10: 25-37 reminds us that some people who pretend to be religious will ignore helping people who are down on their luck or who need our help or kindness. Like the priest in the parable, these Republican commissioners would rather “pass on the other side,” than help the homeless in their community.

enoch,

@flexghost jfc 😑 next they’ll outlaw being poor

BurritoSommelier,

@enoch They kinda just did…

enoch,

@BurritoSommelier they outlawed being homeless, next they’ll outlaw being late on your bills or needing any type of food assistance etc

🪚🔧🪛🔩⚙️ Board of City Commissioners 🪚🔧🪛🔩⚙️ in #ShawneeCounty #Oklahoma in passed ordinance prohibiting sleeping outdoors, sitting or lying down (on the sidewalk?) “God bless us, every-one”

Speaking of the #speakerofthehouse #MAGAMike he said, the #christian belief, compassionate actions, is not for the LAW and not for the GOVERNMENT

@flexghost Greed and selfishness seems to be a common theme with this new version.

@flexghost Martin vs Boise set precedent that cities (states in this case?) cannot enforce anti-camping laws unless they provide enough beds to shelter people.

Chico, CA (where I live) tried to enforce a law similar to Boise’s and we now at least have better and more shelters after Chico got shellacked in court.

Oklahoma can prepare for a costly lawsuit.

"Who among you, when a brother asks for bread, gives him a stone?" -The one Republican Christian in Oklahoma left that gives a shit about the poor.

What exactly are people to do? It would be more cost effective to build state owned and managed affordable housing and shelters

@Mx_EddyNikko i’m not sure what conservative means anymore but it sure doesn’t mean fiscally conservative. I don’t think they care what makes more sense on paper

They are working off the Handmaids Tale scale.

@flexghost So they must provide a warm, comfortable shelter where those who need it can eat, sleep, shower, take care of their basic needs, and can stay for as long as they need to, right?

Right?

@flexghost how is such a shit even legal?

Amd even worse: Why are they not obligated to provide in return?

Because things don't go away by virtue of criminalizing them!

flexghost,
@flexghost@mastodon.social avatar

@kkarhan all of it. They made it legal. Merry Christmas all!

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@kkarhan @flexghost They sure do go away. These kinds of laws are used to bolster slave populations that then get rented out to companies as free or nearly free labor.

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@weilawei @flexghost that also should be illegal!
