Ok, I need some advice.
My daughter won't allow pictures to be taken of her - and this is her right.

However, it turns out that while it IS a privacy issue for her, it isn't about the pictures per se, it's that she doesn't want pictures taken with a phone. Good old normal non-networked digital cameras would be fine, she just doesn't want Google or Apple consuming her likeness.

Any recommendations for affordable decent digital cameras? I haven't owned one in almost a decade...

@grrrr_shark how about a phone like the Fairphone, which is entirely Google-free out of the box?

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@floe Long-term, that's a possibility. For various reasons I can't get into publicly, though, it's not practical at the moment.

I'm really not looking for phone-based solutions at this point for this issue :)

@grrrr_shark
An alternative would be to switch to a smartphone operating system, that respects privacy, like e.g. SailfishOS.

(Don't want to appear like a "reply guy", sorry.)

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@fasnix yeah, this is a long-term consideration, but not possible right now.

lienrag,

@grrrr_shark

Even by a degooglized phone running free camera software ?

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@lienrag Yes. (And we have plenty around.)

Just how it is.

Llamacalamity,

@grrrr_shark Sony rx-100 are good, any version. The III is the best used imo, the original is still very good.
Panasonic LX-5 is a good option too.
I've bought similar cameras off ebay with very good luck. You can also try KEH or Adorama for used cameras.
Prices should drop after the holidays.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@Llamacalamity Thank you! :)

nxskok,

@grrrr_shark thought: isn't it altogether too likely that a picture taken on a digital camera will end up on google photos or the like anyway?

Something like polaroid seems a way to go here: only you (or she) will have copies of the photos.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@nxskok No, it's not. Because we don't send them via email or proprietary messengers, and I don't store things in the cloud. These are mostly just for us, and the storage is local.

The polaroid option would be great except that we both have terrible ADHD and would just lose them ;)

@grrrr_shark What an awesome daughter you have! 🙌

@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@ayo she is really incredible, I agree :)

@grrrr_shark I similarly haven't used a digital camera in a long time, but I like the concept of a MILC, like the Sony Alpha series. I have one, but find I'm not motivated enough to bring it with me. It's a small body, but you don't lose the power of different lenses. This may be a downside, though! No advice for point and shoot, either!

Anyway, tell your daughter she's awesome! This is a great reason to not want your photo taken!

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@rockerest she's a pretty cool kid :)

@grrrr_shark

I like the Nikon Z50 & you might also be able to purchase it with two kit lenses (one "pancake" portrait & one zoom). They are all (relatively) very light (an issue for me), definitely well decent, and I like mine a LOT.

The model is a year or two old now, so while it was a good price even when it first came out, it should be even better now.

I think it's great in a wide range of situations, including and maybe especially low light.

Love mine. Nothing else tempts me at all.

Good on her! There's hope for this generation yet!

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@juliewebgirl she's the kid of two privacy researchers, but I do think many of her friends do think about it 😁

juliewebgirl,
@juliewebgirl@mstdn.social avatar

@grrrr_shark

Nice! You never really know though if they'll shun the things you find important just because... parents rolls eyes LOL

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@juliewebgirl for sure 🤣

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@grrrr_shark I'd say skip the digital part and go analogue. The new Polaroids are great for taking flattering pictures of people.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@alda the problem is that I have terrible ADHD. I'll lose both film and instant snaps, unfortunately 🤣

@grrrr_shark That's a dying market.
Canon's Ixus range has been a reliable bet for a long time, though I've been less than thrilled with the company's climate-denial antics of late.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@KatS thanks for the info ♥️

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@KatS yeah, I figured it was dying. That's uncomfortable as Hell :(
