@KatS@chaosfem.tw

50-ish trans woman; aspiring ladylike dyke. At least as feline as the profile pic implies.

Alleged software developer and occasional musician, former and possibly future infrastructure engineer, goth (ever and always, body and soul).

AuDHD-type.

Far more politically-engaged than I'd prefer, and salty about the fact that it's been made necessary.
I'd prefer that my music and code be more of my identity, and that my gender be in the background with hair-colour and handedness, but here we are.

I miss crows. Crows are nice.

Profile picture: a charcoal sketch of a cat sitting on a tree-stump, looking away from the viewer.
The cat's head is tilted in a way that makes it look contemplative but, honestly, they probably just slipped a mental cog and now their brain is in some kind of phantom neutral.

Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

KatS,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@RickiTarr
A long time back, I shared a house with a guy who worked for one of the big tobacco companies.
One of the perks of his job was taking home all the cigarettes he could smoke, so for all practical purposes he had no sense of smell.

Our washing machine was a top-loader, and he'd forget about having put a load through it - for days on end.

When I told him I'd lifted the lid and the stench of rotting clothes tripped my gag reflex, he accused me of over-reacting.

Conveniently, the drier was mounted above it, and I habitually used the undercover clothesline in the garage, so I worked around the issue by checking daily for his laundry and just shoving it in the drier. He dealt with it when he got to it.

    Hi all. I've got an older running , and I'm thinking about putting on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux , and I saw a few recommendations for to try out. To any Linux users, is a good one for a beginner, or should I try or ? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace ? Thanks.

    KatS,
    @KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

    @RareBird_15 @mastoblind @accessibility @main Nixos is a very bad choice for a beginner.

    Mint or Ubuntu are much better choices.

    I use Nixos and like it a lot, but you need to already be a fairly technical user before trying it.

    Is there any list / webring / index of independent wikis that are not game-related?

    Is there any google dork (or some other search technique) to find them?

    I'm more curious to see what folx build on the wiki platform, but also to go on some nice rabbit holes.

    @catileptic Well, it's wiki-ish: https://www.electronic-quill.net/display/Wikipages/Welcome

    i really dislike mypy

    its main utility seems to be producing busywork and making your code worse with annotations

    i don't expect i'll be ever using mypy in any of my projects

    KatS,
    @KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

    @whitequark I used it a lot at work, once I discovered it, and convinced the rest of my team to start using it.
    It does help catch a bunch of things at compile-time, and our automation would have been worse without it.

    However, that was in a team of network engineers who were learning how to code so they could automate the network.

    In my own stuff, without having to slow down for them? Holy cow, it's pretty much as you describe: lots of busywork to set expectations, which still somehow lets a bunch of type-related runtime errors though.

    My life is too short for playing whack-a-mole with python.

    FWIW, I've given up on having an overarching plan; I'm just sticking with the wayfinding thing and throwing myself into whatever seems like the best way at the time.

    That got me into and through a 23-year career, so it seems to work OK.

    https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/25/telegrams-peer-to-peer-sms-login-service-is-a-privacy-nightmare/

    sigh

    Stop using . Seriously.

    Telegram uses confusing language to pretend it is end-to-end encrypted by default. It is not — you have to enable that separately for each chat, and it only works for one-on-ones, not groups.

    Telegram's protocol design is sus af (that's a technical term), and that's putting real people in real danger:

    I feel like my breakdown yesterday led to a breakthrough.

    I've had so much self-hatred and embarrassment over my 20's and 30's.

    But I was just a person in a whole lot of pain desperate for someone to love her.

    Spent my entire 30's easily manipulated into relationships I didn't want to be in causing 24/7 stress and anxiety. I believed that was all I deserved.

    But I don't feel the need for outside validation anymore.

    Self-worth sets you free.
