Network-connected wrenches in factories can be hacked for sabotage or ransomware

Researchers identify 23 vulnerabilities, some of which can exploited with no authentication.

Air_Cooled_Nut,

As someone who wrenches on my own vehicles, I was amused at such an idea of a IOT torque wrench. Why? Does everything NEED to be connected?

But as one of the commenters mentioned, it makes it easier/better for shop floor assembly procedures, keeping consistency and accuracy (I work for a leading truck manufactures so I get it).

Nice to know there are folks out there exploring all the IOT threat possibilities. Thanks Nozomi (https://www.nozominetworks.com/).

@arstechnica waiting for somebody to network link a urinal and then have the network go down and somehow now you can't piss into it.

@arstechnica Network-connected… wrenches? IoT is becoming truly too stupid to even satirize… smdh.

ElSupreme,

@phryk

They are amazing QA tools. They record the number of bolts driven per assembly per station. They log the exact torque of every bolt. They make sure everything is built as it should be. No loose bolts (737MAX cough cough), no missing bolts.
And down the road if issues are found the manufacturer can look at logs and see if the spec for torque needs to be adjusted (i.e. the VINs failing are on the high or low side of the spec).

phryk,
@phryk@mastodon.social avatar

@ElSupreme So basically, you move part of QA into the assembly procedure instead of doing a dedicated test after the full assembly is done?

bluGill,

You can't QA bolts after the fact. There proper procedure often is torque to yield which means checking the torque will turn them to out of spec.

phryk,
@phryk@mastodon.social avatar

@bluGill @arstechnica @ElSupreme Really? I was pretty sure there's a dedicated type of device to measure specifically how tight bolt/screw connections are, but then again this isn't my area of expertise.

ElSupreme,

@phryk

And as someone who skipped replacing a bolt on a head gasket replacement. On my own shit box car in high school. After the fact tests can pass, even if the assembly is terribly off. Much better way of doing QA.

phryk,
@phryk@mastodon.social avatar

@ElSupreme Cool, thanks for clarifying. :)

@phryk @ElSupreme
If that is replacing the integration test, then you have a classic unit test fallacy and objectively worse than the original testing scheme.

What you have here is a discount robot with a meat-based delivery and logistics mechanism.

As mentioned elsewhere, subject to calibration and programming errors--and now network vulnerabilities.

Guaranteed that management is not going to pay 10x the cost for hardware and infrastructure without cutting costs elsewhere
