@arstechnica Ironic that most of the responses are people making variations of the same joke. (Which, fair's fair, I was going to make until I saw the other versions.) I wonder if you gave ChatGPT this as a prompt, would it come up with the same responses? I'm thinking no.
Maybe raw GPT3.5 would predict the comments because it hasn't yet been aligned using OpenAI's InstructGPT process of Reinforement Learning with Human Feedback
@arstechnica To be fair, google home does this too. theres an 80% chance of being told a joke about caveman farts, or a pun about thors undergarments being "thunderwear"

I probably only know 5 jokes that I repeat at social events, and then there's a buffer that contains the last 3 jokes I laughed at recently because they were going viral on social media, then there's the joke template repository of unknown size that pattern matches phrases during conversation and comes up with snappy cynical one liners
@arstechnica Two things jump out at me immediately:
I have work-related reasons to search for easy jokes quite regularly, and those top jokes are all on literally dozens, probably hundreds of lists of jokes online.
The quoted attempt to explain the nonsensical joke is very similar to what you get when you ask ChatGPT to explain cryptic crossword clues (including ones it makes up, which don't make sense). Such a giveaway that it doesn't actually understand language.
