Since people are talking about Kent State, Ohio, 1970, it's a good time to talk about Jackson State, Mississippi, 1970.
Similar situation, except there was no active protest, just a bunch of students hanging out. The mayor of Jackson declared a riot and called in the pigs. Someone threw a glass bottle, not at the pigs, but they still opened fire. Phillip Gibbs, a student at Jackson State, and James Green, a high school student who was walking home from his job, were murdered by cops. Many others were wounded.
Got my entire house moved out of containers back into the house. Boy, do we have a lot of stuff (just in general). You accumulate a lot of stuff over decades. I am going to set up a shredder and attempt to NOT keep a lot of paper, I'd love to go digital on paperwork (like the kids do nowadays, LOL... everything is a photo on their phone). #disasterremodeling#stuff
ps. free rowing machine for anyone in the Conejo Valley, if anyone wants, LOL. (just a run o the mill one, nothing special...)
So, we occasionally have some mice in the house (even though we have a cat). I've worked on plugging up holes, but some still get through. Rather than use poison, I trap them in Have-A-Heart traps, then release them miles away in rural areas. It's more work than just leaving out poison, but it keeps birds of prey (and our kitty) safe from being poisoned. #HaveAHeart#MouseTraps#HumaneTraps#NoPoisons
If you have friends who are unglued about the Supreme Court decision and are simplifying the conclusions, you can send them to the piece I just posted.
Warn them that it is long, and that I will be taking apart some of their favorite legal pundits.
There was a time when I removed names before I critizied people.
@Teri_Kanefield my understanding is that it would take a very active congress to exercise the 14th against Trump, and that hasn't happened since 1860s. we need a clear law.
"Blazing Saddles," Mel Brooks' Western satire about a Black sheriff (Cleavon Little) appointed to save the town with drunken gunslinger, the Waco Kid (Gene Wilder), turned 50 this month. In this slide show, MovieMaker looks at how the film was made. “It was designed as an esoteric little picture. We wrote it for two weirdos in the balcony. For radicals, film nuts, guys who draw on the washroom wall — my kind of people,” Brooks told Playboy in 1975.
But, the fat tires are most certainly are better and safer after the rain with all the debris on the road here than the road bike... quite the slip hazard around here, at least until the city street cleaners show up and get all the wet leaves!!!
(switched to the MTB for a couple of weeks due to rain)
The Florida Republican House passed HB1 which bans kids from social media
…though it’s intent is to make everyone register in order to track dissent
Don’t want kids posting about having to work a double shift while pregnant?
What’s more: The CDC reports 12 million people had suicidal ideation last year
3,351 Floridians ended their lives in 2021
LGBTQIA+? Higher risk
This bill removes their support network
@simonzerafa@martinvermeer@jeffjarvis it will be a consequence, don't be intentionally dense. if you thought allowing the Soviet Union to collapse without structure was bad, wait until these christofascists get going.
My little sister, who is 16 years old wants to learn game programming. She doesn't have any prior knowledge, and doesn't know where to start. Is there any good learning websites or resources I could point her towards?
@emelie what I find interesting is no reason is given for why she wants to learn "game programming". is she enraptured by the thought of using shaders and polygons and sub-pixel anti-aliasing? or just creating a cool interactive story? this feels like some requirements analysis didn't happen up front.
Now I could have fruit for breakfast... but the deli down the street is serving meatloaf breakfast sandwiches and it's only -10 out. I could probably survive that.
... whoever thought of meatloaf breakfast sandwiches was a genius and whoever decided to only sell them for a month each year has undoubtedly saved my life.
They're talking about grade inflation at the Ivies again. And OK, fair. Everyone gets an A. But can we also talk about educator inflation? Educator inflation is a good thing! By educator inflation I mean: the typical educator at a top tier university today, is miles better at educating, than the typical educator at that same institution 50 years ago.
The field of education is not static. There are constant advances in how material is presented, and how students are supported.
@mekkaokereke in order to relate the material the 2024 professors will be using references that the 1974 students might not understand fully. moreover, the students may not be ready to fully grasp the presentation style differences (ready to learn).you might be right for some subjects but I can't imagine what those might be.
@mekkaokereke I don't see how 1974 attitudes and cultural references are the same as foreign students with little English, so I am unconvinced. i suspect you might be right about educators being better now, but what you wrote doesn't support that.
@wordshaper@mekkaokereke that might be true for educational materials, as those always tend to advance in STEM. I don't see the evidence for educators being better although I suspect they are.
@Teri_Kanefield I think you make a great case here. and I hate it because I definitely wanted something easy and simple to disqualify that orange potato.
