Quick question: Have any of the tech experts who claimed crypto to be real and important and meaningful and totally not a scam apologized so far? Or have they all just switched to doing the same for "AI"?

Like I literally lost friends/friendly acquaintances over my criticism of crypto. People who told me that I was just too dumb to get it and that I was harming the Internet's progress. Most don't even speak about crypto anymore. Because of course not.

dadbod_beeblebrox,

@tante brutal. Being right about Web3 is not a path to professional reward, especially when people you meant to help are still chasing their sunk costs. Or so I hear.

@ArneBab@rollenspiel.social avatar

@tante do you mean cryptocoins?

markhughes,
@markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

@tante I don't speak about it because most who do (on either side) have closed minds.

Example: all cryptocurrency is a scam versus cryptocurrency must save the world.

I see a future for secure p2p tokens, but I'm wary of discussing that part because I think people switch off to anything else the moment it's mentioned.

What I do think is bad is energy inefficiency, centralisation of power and fraud, all of which are rife in many industries and monetary systems, not just blockchain based tokens

AE35,

@tante Well, you're answering it yourself! You where harming the progress, so you have to apologize! </s>

@tante no because the definition of "hustle" is to highlight wins and minimize losses.

I've got an acquaintance (used to be a friend) who bought into Bitcoin. He preached endlessly about how the Canadian Dollar was going to go bust, and that BTC was the future.

To go around doomsaying about an entire first-world country's economy is just something else...

@tante grifters separate themselves through the use of jargon. I'd wager that every person who said "you're too dumb to get it" doesn't understand the jargon either. They're just adept at parroting it.

Humans are great at finding patterns in noise. It's the same with finding (erroneously) meaning in jargon.

@tante

A lot have just switched - Sam Altman said exactly that at his "fireside chat" in Australia this week, and I guess he should know.

But I suspect a lot also continue to believe that crypto would be transformative, if it wasn't being undermined by critics, and conspiracies of bankers and governments.

tante,
@tante@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@apocraphilia Oh, do you have a link to Altmans Statements? Because he still has his scammy worldcoin thing going

apocraphilia,
@apocraphilia@hachyderm.io avatar

@tante

Sorry, I don't think it was recorded.

Someone did ask a question that mentioned the WorldCoin stuff, but it was just a sycophant, asking how he can be so awesome all the time. 🤢

vmexell,

@tante totally unrelated pic, taken in München

alper,
@alper@rls.social avatar

@tante Do you have a list somewhere?

tante,
@tante@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@alper Kevin Roose, Kara Swisher, all the celebrities who did Ads for those companies and pushed that stuff to their followers on Instagram etc.

ivaliotes,
@ivaliotes@hachyderm.io avatar

@tante @alper Neither Roose nor Swisher have demonstrated an ounce of self-awareness or even the slightest capacity to view themselves as anything other than infallible. Celebrities' P.R. handlers believe they can ignore things away, and they're usually right.

@pepicrft@mastodon.social avatar

@tante most have just jumped into the new trend to capitalize it sooner than anyone else

andreclaassen,

@tante why should they do it ?

tante,
@tante@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@andreclaassen The Bitcoiners are a bit of a different crowd. I was talking about the "blockchain for everything" people with their DAOs and NFTs who claimed it was more than just a get rich quick scheme

andreclaassen,

@tante ok , they took their money and moved on to AI. One of them was a former president.

andreclaassen,

@tante next step quantum computing

tongpu,
@tongpu@hachyderm.io avatar

@tante @andreclaassen I just wanted to ask how far in the past I should apologize for such a statement. In 2010 I thought Bitcoin could revolutionize the world, nowadays I've realized that this won't happen anymore.

@andreclaassen @tante Yes, the Bitcoin bros are (if possible) even worse.
