can someone please ask michael lewis to stop referring to the sam bankman-fried trial as a "lynching" holy shit

@molly0xfff What's so remarkable how he continues to speak without having the vaguest idea what he's talking about. He's so obsessed with the hagiography that for some reason he needed to write. He may not have been an expert on the topics he wrote about previously, but never before has he been completely bereft of basic understanding of the topic. In that context, his sudden dip into downright horrific false equivalency is less surprising...but still plain old weird.

Polling y'all IT and security people for my own amusement and frustration -

The very worst tech sales pitch you got this week:

@ivaliotes@hachyderm.io avatar

@hacks4pancakes Tried to pitch me on services for our data center. Anyone in technology who knows my employer's name knows we don't have a data center. Then wrote back a day later when I didn't respond, as though I owe prompt responses to all cold emails.

If Jack Dorsey & Elon Musk (who are friends) just wanted to run a MAGA site full of fascists, they could have just bought Parler & saved themselves approx 43.999 billion dollars.

What they wanted was to cripple the sad remnants of investigative journalism, and the political left, which successfully used Twitter for political organizing, activism & messaging throughout the Trump regime.

Why would anyone who cares about either of these things go to Jack's project.

@chargrille The major platforms are like the One Ring. Everyone claims to know their dark power, but most cannot bring themselves to give up their Precious - in particular, the content creators. They're addicted to the power they associate with their follower numbers, and they'll do mental triple backflips to rationalize providing unambiguous material support to Musk and Dorsey. That's why allegedly caring people continue to post and read there.

In today's remarkable right-wing self-own, crazy, COVID-minimizing, MAGA Laura Loomer admits to having Long without realizing it.

Tweet: Food doesn’t have much taste these days. It’s tough to find something that does. @LauraLoomer reply: It’s not just you. I don’t know what it is but food tastes very weird these days. It started to happen around COVID. Things don’t have much flavor anymore.

Quick question: Have any of the tech experts who claimed crypto to be real and important and meaningful and totally not a scam apologized so far? Or have they all just switched to doing the same for "AI"?

@tante @alper Neither Roose nor Swisher have demonstrated an ounce of self-awareness or even the slightest capacity to view themselves as anything other than infallible. Celebrities' P.R. handlers believe they can ignore things away, and they're usually right.

My life is remembering the right etiquette for the right culture and drinking the right amount and knowing what to do in the disaster and wearing the right clothes and makeup and having the right hair and nails done ahead of time, and having the proper media schedule, and knowing which greeting is appropriate, how to code switch, and listening at the right time, and when to be quiet all when carrying the weight of a crisis and catastrophe.

@hacks4pancakes I can tell you with honesty that I never thought you were living a rockstar life. Fun in parts, perhaps, but not always, because that's not life. So yes, I am sure it is hard and it really sucks at times. Hang in there, practice self care, give yourself the breaks any human needs. There is empathy for you out here.

So... I feel like a total dick for saying this, but 5 out of 7 of my last mentorship sessions have no-showed or cancelled within 10 minutes of their appointments in the past week. Only one person out of those has provided any reasonable reason. I'm really sorry - if this keeps up much longer I am not going to be able to continue the service.

If you aren't respectful of my time, please, please be respectful of the time of others who help you along your career journey. I miss every single Sunday afternoon I could spend with my family for nothing but occasional tips. Some folks wait months for these appointments.

@hacks4pancakes So yes, I think you're not merely justified but wise to consider stopping or even just pausing the whole thing. Maybe some automation can be applied that requires people to confirm a week and then a day beforehand so that you at least get lead time on no shows. Although I doubt that comes without cost. You're doing people a great service, and deserve to be treated with respect.
