Ebikes made 56% of all bicycles sold in the Netherlands in 2023. In terms of value (💶), ebikes took even a higher share of 80% of the €1,4 billion.

It’s been already 5 years since e-bikes made majority of sold units in NL, the share keeps on growing. Other key European markets following with 2-4 years delay.

Oh, and by the way, the Dutch kept of buying more e-bikes than all cars - not only electric, but all cars - together.

@_roman @herbert_tiemens What an interesting stat! I’d be curious to see the trend over time - I wonder if it’s so high because normal bikes have been in high usage for years so their purchase rates are fairly steady, whereas e-bikes have gained popularity massively in the last few years? In which case I wonder if the ratio of e-bikes bought will drop as the market matures, maybe in 10-15 years time?

@Brendanjones e-bikes are heavily pushed by bike dealers. I heared several stories of customers that they really had to persist to buy a traditional bike instead of an e-bike. It's simple, there is more profit on e-bikes as the price is higher and they are less serviceable yourself. @_roman

@herbert_tiemens @Brendanjones This and the fact e-bikes simply enable comfortable rides for longer distances while we ain’t getting younger.

I certainly love my yet really really like this type of innovation and progress.

@_roman Oh yes, the distance people will cover by e-bike is longer, so it will give a mode shift. On the other hand even teens are using e-bikes nowadays, who are perfect capable to cycle to school. It might affect their health development in the future. @Brendanjones

@herbert_tiemens @_roman Yeah the growth in kids using them I’m not a fan of. I kinda give a pass to the kids I see on them when I’m out on my race bike, when they’re using them to ride between villages - it’s a bit pissweak, but I get it, riding from Zeist into Utrecht (for example) is a bit of a trip. But the kids I see on them within Utrecht? Why do they need e-bikes?!

@herbert_tiemens @_roman Same with healthy adults, honestly. The amount of people whipping around Amsterdam on Van Moofs and other fancy e-bikes is crazy to me. You don’t even need gears to get around Amsterdam, let alone electric assist.

The only time I’m happy to see e-bikes is when trips are being taken that wouldn’t otherwise happen on bikes, e.g. older people or electric bakfietsen replacing cars.
