Waarschijnlijk regulier onderhoud. Bomen moeten natuurlijk niet te groot worden, anders worden ze beschermd. Maar misschien gaan er ook zonnepanelen in de middenberm geplaatst worden, het is er een kansrijke locatie voor.

Received some questions about my travel reimbursement for a meeting in Brussels a few weeks ago. Train ticket and hotel were accepted, but the €40 for the return trip? When I explained I cycled back to the Netherlands, everything was clear. 😁

It was a good bike day.

Last days I was busy guiding civil servants from in . They were followed by a film crew from ZDF and Arte to see what a real means. Both crew and servants were impressed by the quality of the network and the efforts to get the details right.

Bidirectional cycle path with curve to left. The smooth asphalt is blinking due to rain. A tunnel for amphibians crosses the path.
Servants measure a three lane road. Two outer lanes are in red asphalt for cycling, the middle lane in brick stones is for car traffic. Every lane is 2 meters wide.

In the family app group my aunt celebrates 60 year anniversary of cars in the family. Since I am living my adult life without owning a car, it is a footnote for me.

Ebikes made 56% of all bicycles sold in the Netherlands in 2023. In terms of value (💶), ebikes took even a higher share of 80% of the €1,4 billion.

It’s been already 5 years since e-bikes made majority of sold units in NL, the share keeps on growing. Other key European markets following with 2-4 years delay.

Oh, and by the way, the Dutch kept of buying more e-bikes than all cars - not only electric, but all cars - together.

@Brendanjones e-bikes are heavily pushed by bike dealers. I heared several stories of customers that they really had to persist to buy a traditional bike instead of an e-bike. It's simple, there is more profit on e-bikes as the price is higher and they are less serviceable yourself. @_roman

@_roman Oh yes, the distance people will cover by e-bike is longer, so it will give a mode shift. On the other hand even teens are using e-bikes nowadays, who are perfect capable to cycle to school. It might affect their health development in the future. @Brendanjones

Engineering question

Denmark - when building the Storebæltsbroen - concluded you cannot easily put a railway on a suspension bridge (so tunnelled the railway instead)

The Øresundsbron is a cable stay bridge instead of suspension

And here comes a proposal for a suspension bridge at the Strait of Messina with a central span of 3.3km... how will they account for movement / flex when a train crosses? 🤔

Is there hope on the horizon that from 18 August DB will run its new ICE3neo trains Köln-Bruxelles?

Via @jonasfranz this screenshot shows ICEs that can convey bikes on the route - something that the current (horribly unreliable) ICEs cannot…

@burger_jaap International bicycle transport reservations for regular trains are still impossible at DB website and app. Only available when you want to queue at ticket counters or a specialised train ticket shop. @jon @jonasfranz

Oh wow, das nachfragen, welche Konserquenzen für mehr Sicherheit die Polizei nach einem schweren "Unfall" (den es unter Beachtung der StVO nie gegeben hätte, also schon fahrlässige Tötung im Spiel ist) ergreifen wird, pampig mit einer unterstellten Vorverurteilung des "Hass auf Autofahrer" zu reagieren.

Das ist schon ne Dienstaufsichtsbeschwerde wert.

@ssamulczyk Since 2020 I challenge myself for a Midwinter Solstice Ride, starting at 4:15pm and finishing at 9:30am the next morning.
Always around 300 kilometers, and self supported (except first year, had pasta by @petervalkema ). So I bring a stove for a warm meal and extra water.
Last year it was -7 C with freezing fog.

Currently planning my next adventure for 22/23 December.

@ssamulczyk Sure, they grow up! I got the idea after a Midsummer Solstice Ride with my daughter, which was one of the best rides ever. This winter her friend might join me for the second half of the ride, he is as crazy as me.

Kennen jullie die van die ontwerp- en mobiliteitsonderzoeker die dacht dat je het met overstaps van drie kwartier wel zou moeten redden van Rotterdam naar Milan?
Goed, die onderzoeker overnacht vannacht dus waarschijnlijk in Basel.
Mensen, echt hoor, als we willen dat meer mensen de trein gaan nemen in plaats van het vliegtuig móet dit echt beter. Het is namelijk geen incident, dit gebeurt heel vaak.
(En dan heb ik het nog niet eens over het boeken gehad.)

@freekbomhof bij grensoverschrijdende treinreizen is het Europese reizigshandvest ook van toepassing en dient de vervoerder voor adequate vervanging en zo nodig hotelovernachting te zorgen (geldt ook voor Zwitserland en Noorwegen).

Pro tip: Altijd het ticket uitprinten, zodat de conducteur er een aantekening over de vertraging op kan maken. Dan gaan in het Reisecentrum alle deuren open. @jaspervankuijk

Thank you! Fascinating to see this in graphs, it seems we are into something. I can think of venting of superfluous gas because of decline of oil and gas demand in 2020 due to lockdowns started mid March in Europe and some weeks later in America.
