A very merry "here we go with stories on how daylight saving time is a horrible, outdated idea again" to all those who celebrate.

Can we please just stop doing DST? I honestly don't care which "time" ("summer" or "winter") becomes the standard, as long as we stop the silly ritual of moving the clocks twice a year for no benefit at all.

@rysiek thanks for reminding that we (The Netherlands, were I am from), also do that silly dance. Twice a year and I ABSOLUTELY hate it.

@JWneural@mstdn.social avatar

@rysiek how about we just spring forward half an hour and leave it at that… forever.

SuitedUpDev,
@SuitedUpDev@mastodon.online avatar

@JWneural @rysiek than we basically get what North Korea had for ages....

UTC+8,5 or as it was called back then Pyongyang Time.

@rysiek
In the UK we change on the last Sunday in March.

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@wyliecoyoteuk in Iceland, we don't observe DST.

But because most US states do, and all EU countries do, I get scheduling chaos for 2 weeks anyway.

@rysiek @SaveStandard will be happy to inform you why permanent DST is just a terrible idea.

States in the US can already choose to stop using DST, and a few have.

@rysiek We could do one better, and go full-GMT.

We'd all start the day at different times, but we already wake at the hour of '7' or '8', so it's not like we lose out on waking up at 'the first hour' (which would make more sense).

I'm getting a little tired of Americans scheduling meetings at '7' (WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?).

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@malin surely, you mean UTC

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@rysiek
I think those are different names for the same thing. Or is there some difference?

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@malin yeah. UTC just untethers it from a specific location in the UK. Which some people feel strongly about for reasons of, well, empire.

@rysiek

If Batman = Bruce Wayne, then I don't understand what people mean when they say 'that wasn't Batman, in fact it was Bruce Wayne'.

Would colonialization, by any other name, smell as sweet?

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@malin embedding a reminder of colonization into daily stuff like timezones is something some people would prefer to avoid, is all. No biggie on my end, just making a note, is all.
