Kids walking around with thousand euro iPhones on schools and such is apparently normal :blobcatblueegg:

Unfort those mega calculators are mostly used for things like toxic TikTok and not educational purposes :sadlinux:

trebach,

@stux Give them a Voyager. It looks advanced enough to be a Samsung Note but it's 17 years old, so it can't run apps or have a web browser

Neilh90,

@stux used for bullying! It is horrendous what kids are doing these days.

When I was in school the bullying stopped when you got home.

Now you are getting messages all night saying horrendous things about you. Block them? They give the number out to their friends and they message isstead.

We've been the police more than once, for all the good it's done us. 13-15 year old girls getting endlessly harassed

@stux
I once went to school with a Palm Zire 31.
My huge nerd self stayed after class talking with the professor about how I used it to draw functions.
Side note: I hated Maths, and took the time to learn how to install the calculator and create formulas to display some funky graphs, but no teacher cared and continued to give me the traditional problems and make me hate my life.

Most parents don't monitor or control their kids screen time, or provision where their kids can and cannot use their web, camera, microphone capable devices.

Moving from there, there are no safeguards for advertising, so your kids are seeing sexualized content on their in game advertising, yes even in kids games. (Canada).

I have a hard time faulting parents as most people are struggling to eat these days, hold your priorities lightly and respect we all do the best we can every day.

SergioGlorias,

@stux
There was a year at school that the math teacher allowed us to use the calculator on our cell phones.
Since many of us don't have the money to buy a graphing calculator (which is one of the most expensive ones) and in the end we weren't going to use it ever again in the future (outside of school)
He had even recommended the APP to use

@stux It's hard once some kid in their class gets bought the latest and greatest glass rectangle of dreams by well-meaning but IT-illiterate parents. There's a lot of pressure.

Our kids have one of our old Huaweis each. No data, calls only, strict parental controls over apps and content and time-limits. And they hate it.

Not saying we're doing it right but I think it's a good compromise.

@stux

T'is nothing compared the need to deliver little Jean & Jeanette to school in a 50K polluting SUV to maintain their social status.

crw,

@stux Not normal, just to show their status. For what education, teachers here call them brain-extender ;-)
