I was just talking to an American friend about Canadian housing prices, and he shared this graph with me. 😬

Further proof that the Canadian housing crisis really has been insane for over 20 years, with apparently no end in sight.

(FYI: this data is not the whole country, but major metros in each)

@notjustbikes See this article from 2021:

"Canadian real estate is unaffordable, but you don’t appreciate how bad the reality is until you look at its G7 peers. The latest house price-to-income ratio data from the OECD shows all G7 countries are seeing affordability decline. However, Canada has consistently seen home prices outgrow incomes. Since 2005, no other G7 country has seen the gap between home prices and incomes widen this much. It’s not even close. "

@IgorRock @notjustbikes If you would take 2010 as a base instead of 2005. The increase for Germany and Canada would be pretty much the same. If you take 2012 USA and Canada are the same. Fun with statistics :D. What a difference looking at 9, 11 or 16 years makes.

@spiza @notjustbikes
Canada Q1 2010: 115.15
Canada Q2 2021: 164.79
Difference: 49.64

Germany Q1 2010: 91.13
Germany Q2 2021: 128.46
Difference: 37.33

Come again?

PS: For the US one: US 23.52, Canada 44.42, a difference of 20.9. I recommend going back to school...

@IgorRock @notjustbikes Germany 2010 Q4 128.46/88.94 44.4 %
Canada 2010 Q4 164.79/114.82 43.5 %

@spiza @notjustbikes Well, then lets take newer data, just for fun:

@IgorRock @notjustbikes Thats exactly what i meant with fun with statistics. Look for charts that make country x look the worst. OCED published 2022 data 2020 HC1.2 Housing costs over income. https://www.oecd.org/housing/data/affordable-housing-database/housing-conditions.htm putting the Netherlands infront of Canada.

This thread has become the Housing Crisis Olympics. 😆

@notjustbikes and than today this: only single family homes allowed in most of Ontario, also in the future : https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-premier-ford-says-its-a-massive-mistake-to-impose-fourplexes-across/

@tkneubuhler lol what a buffoon. I have no idea why people voted for Ford. I've met the guy: he's an idiot.

Nice to see that my friend Mike was quoted in that article.

@tkneubuhler @notjustbikes Interesting how Ford tells on himself here: allowing gentle density would cause a lot of yelling and he personally has a history of not being able to handle a lot of yelling unless it’s from downtown. So he blocks the opportunity for housing.

And to think, this is the average across major metros. Toronto and Vancouver will be significantly worse than this average.

I genuinely don't understand how society can function when housing is this expensive compared to incomes.

UrbanEdm,
@UrbanEdm@mstdn.ca avatar

@notjustbikes It's true that it's not functioning well, but I dug into the days source of this a while back, and the Canadian data is not actually for the whole country. I'd have to do the research again for the details, but as I recall it relies on an index that only tracked big cities, and possibly only SFH.

meena,
@meena@glitch.social avatar

@UrbanEdm @notjustbikes if only cities are getting more expensive you should see a trend of city folks fleeing to the suburbs, and/or the country side.

(We have this here in Ireland, where most teachers and nurses can't afford to actually live where they are needed to work… which is… you know… bad.)

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@meena Canada has the concept of "drive 'til you quality" (for a mortgage).

That is, you head out as far as you can until you can find a house that's within your price range.

That's getting increasingly insane in the Toronto area, with people literally living up to a 2 hour drive from where they work.

Ultimately the job centres are in the major cities, so most people can't just go live in the woods, so "exurbs" are popping up everywhere; suburban housing disconnected from everything.

@notjustbikes I think different graphs should be produced for Canada, Canada-Vancouver and Canada-(Vancouver + Toronto).

@notjustbikes
Not unlike Australia, Canada is a country with an enormous amount of foreign ownership and foreign REIT`s investment in homes. This is particularly bad in both countries because both have relatively small populations in relation to the number and amount of these. That is, the amount of money coming in from overseas overwhelms the mechanisms of the local markets and completely skews the costs.

joaop,

@notjustbikes how did your short trip to Lisbon go?

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@joaop very short but good. I'll need to go back some time.
