I was just talking to an American friend about Canadian housing prices, and he shared this graph with me. 😬

Further proof that the Canadian housing crisis really has been insane for over 20 years, with apparently no end in sight.

(FYI: this data is not the whole country, but major metros in each)

@IgorRock@social.cologne avatar

@notjustbikes See this article from 2021:

"Canadian real estate is unaffordable, but you don’t appreciate how bad the reality is until you look at its G7 peers. The latest house price-to-income ratio data from the OECD shows all G7 countries are seeing affordability decline. However, Canada has consistently seen home prices outgrow incomes. Since 2005, no other G7 country has seen the gap between home prices and incomes widen this much. It’s not even close. "

@spiza @notjustbikes
Canada Q1 2010: 115.15
Canada Q2 2021: 164.79
Difference: 49.64

Germany Q1 2010: 91.13
Germany Q2 2021: 128.46
Difference: 37.33

Come again?

PS: For the US one: US 23.52, Canada 44.42, a difference of 20.9. I recommend going back to school...

If for whatever reason you never wish to interact with , you can personally block it for your account. This hides all posts and profiles from Threads, prevents anyone from Threads from following you, and stops your posts from being delivered to or fetched by Threads. Simply click the "Block domain threads.net" option on any Threads profile or post you see in Mastodon.

IgorRock,
@IgorRock@social.cologne avatar

@BeAware @Gargron It's so funny that basically everybody forgets that, if any company wants to read all your posts, they can use your RSS feed already right now.
If Threads federates in both directions, Meta will not be able to get more of your data than it can already get right now, just over the webserver itself... but, in blocking Threads, you will prevent others from joining the Fediverse, because most of their friends are using Threads.
The Fediverse has to be better than Threads.

davidrevoy, to threads
@davidrevoy@framapiaf.org avatar

The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

IgorRock,
@IgorRock@social.cologne avatar

@davidrevoy Let me put it this way: Yes, I care about my privacy, that's why I'm on Mastodon.
No, most other people don't care about this, and cannot be bothered to do so (their choice).
ActivityPub is a protocol like SMTP, which just means that everybody can implement a service with it, which then can interact with other services using the same protocol.
I myself am looking forward to finally be able to chat with those other people again WITHOUT HAVING TO JOIN THAT COMMERCIAL PLATFORM MYSELF.

IgorRock,
@IgorRock@social.cologne avatar

@davidrevoy Well, as long as there is no "bold font" or anything in Mastodon, the only way to emphasize the important part is - sadly - upper case.
As such, on platforms which don't support bold or italic fonts, I myself don't equal upper case text with yelling, as I do on platforms which have those.
Maybe this is something which should be improved in Mastodon (it would be easy to use some wiki-like syntax to do so, to be honest, clients just would have to support it, no protocol change needed).

Today I learned that LEGO has a program where you can send them your old LEGO (bricks, pieces, mini-figs, etc). LEGO will then take them in, wash / sterilize them, and donate them to children in need!

They even pay for the shipping for you.

If you want to know more, you can check out their website here: https://www.lego.com/en-us/sustainability/environment/replay

@mdmrn Looks like this program is available in Canada as well (sadly, it's not available in the rest of the world - at least yet?): https://www.lego.com/en-ca/sustainability/environment/replay

▶️ $17.44 ◀️ That’s the average donation to Thunderbird so far in 2023. A gift roughly the price of a pizza helps provide jobs. It helps us bring Thunderbird to iOS and Android even faster. It helps us develop new features. It substantially improves our sustainability.

YOU have that power! YOU can help give people a free, ethical alternative to corporate giants and walled gardens. Please donate today, and help Thunderbird thrive: https://mzla.link/eoy23_masto

IgorRock,
@IgorRock@social.cologne avatar

@thunderbird I was going to give you a donation (via PayPal), but sorry, not if I have to give you my full address. If I'm authenticated by PayPal, that should be sufficient - it is for literally ANY other company I use it for paying.
And while we are at it: I don't want to "One-time setup, faster checkouts." at all (which, I guess, is the reason WHY it's asking for my address).
I just want to make a one-time donation, like throwing a fiver in a hat, as I do with other organizations via PayPal.

IgorRock,
@IgorRock@social.cologne avatar

@thunderbird "for identity verification" - well, there's your problem.
That's EXACTLY what I don't want - and don't need on any other page or organization I've used PayPal for in the past (like, just yesterday, actually).
PayPal verifies my identity already (two factor login), so there is no need why you should need this, too.
From a privacy POV, this is the worst you can do, and from a data economy and safety POV, it's even worse - adding another DB which can be breached or leaked.

A little advice about social media from someone who has been on social media since it has existed. You don’t have to argue. When someone wants to argue with you, you should block them. There is no good outcome possible from arguing on social media.

@notjustbikes In case you wondered what car ownership really costs (in Canada), somebody did the math for his own car over 7 years (which he got for $500 Canadian).
Hint: It's a LOT (and he didn't even had that many repairs with his car). 😮
