Got my entire house moved out of containers back into the house. Boy, do we have a lot of stuff (just in general). You accumulate a lot of stuff over decades. I am going to set up a shredder and attempt to NOT keep a lot of paper, I'd love to go digital on paperwork (like the kids do nowadays, LOL... everything is a photo on their phone). #disasterremodeling#stuff

@ai6yr The trick with going digital (besides really great backup, off-site backup, and fire safety) is making sure you set up a consistent file system that fits how you'll remember where to find stuff when you need it.
@meganL Well, it's going to be better than my current paper filing system, which is "SHOVE IT IN THE FILING CABINET IN CASE I NEED IT IN 25 YEARS..." and "HUH, WHAT'S IN THIS THING"
@ai6yr Just a warning from what I've experienced. It gets harder and harder for me to deal with a bad digital system because there are technical considerations that don't exist with paper filing. You're tech-savvy enough it might not be an issue for you. For me, it's easier (if spoons-intensive) to overhaul paper filing, but once I've got multiple backups done in a bad way, it's hard for me to refile all those many digital files...takes many more hours.
@meganL Thanks. Yeah, the problem with digital filing is finding the digital files, too, LOL. Also the tendency to keep everything, and backups, and running out of storage, etc. It it a lot more compact though and it is much easier to purge digital files than physical ones.
@knowattitude@meganL I frequently say, when in my workshop, "Oh, great, looks like today GRAVITY IS WINNING". Could also be "ENTROPY IS WINNING", lol.
For some reason (even with careful filing/stacking of stuff) some random pile o'electronic components will redistribute itself over my floor... never fail. In an earthquake there will just be a several gigantic pile of radio electronics where I live.
@ai6yr@meganL I can picture in my mind's eye a thing that I know (or believe) I have, but not where it must be. Yet. The first place I looked created even more entropy and time cleaning up 🤦♂️
@knowattitude@meganL One thing which I have been doing (well, until the whole plumbing disaster) was to ALWAYS RETURN THINGS TO THE SAME PLACE -- even after a single use. I used to be very bad about that (even when I was young), but filing stuff away in the exactly same place every time really reduces the mental load for me. Otherwise... 15 minutes of searching the house for something I was walking around with (it's always on some random surface I never thought about, i.e. top of the fridge, on a chair, etc. etc.). Easier to go put it away and go get it again than the entropy issues...
@mjausson Thanks! Now to move enough stuff out of boxes to be able to move back over there, and also move everything that is over here back over there, LOL.
