Fixation How to Have Stuff Without Breaking the Planet by Sandra Goldmark, 2020
Our massive, global system of consumption is broken. Our individual relationship with our stuff is broken. In each of our homes, some stuff is broken. And the strain of rampant consumerism and manufacturing is breaking our planet. We need big, systemic changes, from public policy to global economic systems. But we don't need to wait for them.
The US government wants to make sure only they can use DataFarming platforms to spy on and influence US citizens. They're following the example set by the CCP, which has been blocking foreign-owned platforms for years, for similar reasons.
Supplying housing to professionals who move to take up positions is common in Oz. Why do we not do this here? Owning and managing houses, if done well, is cheaper than paying enough in salaries for rents or mortgage payments. Especially at times when these are ballooning.
My chronic illnesses are having one of those, we're too tired to do anything days. Or more like week. 😂
I just wish it didn't have to mean that my mind takes it upon itself to make me feel bad about not doing enough. 🤔
Got my entire house moved out of containers back into the house. Boy, do we have a lot of stuff (just in general). You accumulate a lot of stuff over decades. I am going to set up a shredder and attempt to NOT keep a lot of paper, I'd love to go digital on paperwork (like the kids do nowadays, LOL... everything is a photo on their phone). #disasterremodeling#stuff
ps. free rowing machine for anyone in the Conejo Valley, if anyone wants, LOL. (just a run o the mill one, nothing special...)
Why is the Stuff website trying to get me to login with a Goggle account now?!? Isn't this one of the 2 companies whose duopoly is killing their business model? Why are they contributing to the reach and power of their network?
"As one famous Australian constitutional lawyer said, and it remains the case even under MMP... NZ is an Executive paradise. The sovereignty of Parliament in NZ - which means Parliament can pass any law it likes - is actually the sovereignty of the Executive, not of the Parliament. And that is why so many Opposition MPs have such a frustrating life, because they have very little influence over anything."
Could a staff buyout save NewsHub? When Stuff was facing a similar fate at the hands of overseas owners, a member of staff bought it for $1. It's now a much better news service for being journalist-driven, instead of profit-driven. It would be even better if it put social enterprise principles into its constitution to enshrine that.
Good, groggy morning, fediverse. Today a focused horde of antiques buffs, vendors, treasure hunters and demanding hipsters will descend upon the big warehouse where I toil to purchase refurbished and gussied up miscellany (ultimately creating funding the Oakland Museum of California). This is Preview Day, where people pay $40 for tickets. Give me strength. The Baccarat / JBL / Pyrex / Selectrics are gonns fly! #WhiteElephantSale#consumerism#sparkly#stuff#allTheThings#glass
Movers ran out of boxes again... 20+ years of accumulation of stuff does that to you. I suspect there will be a pruning when it starts getting loaded back in here. Already sacrificed a t-shirt to the boiled linseed oil gods. #stuff
