I just found out X/Twitter unilaterally "verified" my old and dormant account there ("because you're an influential user"), now making me look like I'm an idiot who's voluntarily paying Musk eight bucks or whatever it is a month.

A free gift of defamation.

@mattblaze

Brian Krebs seems to have found a way to turn it off.

@kataclyst Yeah, I found that. Thanks.

Bastards.

My guess is they re-activated all the legacy verified accounts.

@mattblaze Nope.

I already boosted a couple threads that explained how to hide the checkmark (it’s under “verification settings”).

But the fact that this is opt-out is still annoying. It’s like having my suit come back from the dry cleaner with a fascist armband sewn onto the sleeve because I didn’t notice the sign about their new free fascist armband policy.

mwyman,
@mwyman@mastodon.social avatar

@mattblaze worse, because it’s like they came to your house without telling you and sewed the armband on to a suit you once had them clean.

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@mwyman Should have read the dry cleaning EULA.

@dannotdaniel@mastodon.social avatar

@mattblaze sometimes you have to throw the suit out

@mattblaze excellent analogy

I haven't used my Twitter account since I moved here over a year ago after Musk made his intentions clear. I made a pretty clean break.

Why don't I just delete the account? Two reasons:

  • The username is reasonably well known to belong to me, and if I delete the account, an impersonator could grab it.

  • Many old Twitter threads are linked to from elsewhere (news articles, blog posts, etc), and if I delete them, that content gets memory holed and the threads get broken.

cigitalgem,
@cigitalgem@sigmoid.social avatar

@mattblaze same. I think that's the right solution (though my followers were only 6k or so).

kingtor,
@kingtor@urbanists.social avatar

@mattblaze curious if you've gone back to look at it? I have not looked at any of the Twitter accounts I abandoned but did not delete, but I heard a rumor awhile ago that musk was threatening to delete unused accounts

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@kingtor Well, he's actually doing the opposite of that with me.

dannotdaniel,
@dannotdaniel@mastodon.social avatar

@mattblaze I don't think you need to worry about impersonators on a platform you don't care about anymore right

the whole thing about memory holes though that's a tough one for me

BernieDoesIt,
@BernieDoesIt@mstdn.social avatar

@dannotdaniel @mattblaze Impersonators can still ruin your reputation even if they use a platform you don't.

dannotdaniel,
@dannotdaniel@mastodon.social avatar

@BernieDoesIt @mattblaze I'm skeptical but it's not a completely insane thought

my skepticism is mostly born of my own personal concerns which sounded very similar and which have completely evaporated after I deleted my account and I have zero regrets

then again I'm just some random person on the fedi and I only had like 6 or 7,000 followers anyway, and I wasn't a known public person or anything like that

dannotdaniel,
@dannotdaniel@mastodon.social avatar

@BernieDoesIt @mattblaze I hope this didn't come across as judgement because that was not my intent

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

Everyone's situation is different, but fully deleting the account has messy side effects if you had any significant presence there in the before time.

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

(Cue the judgmental scolds for whom disengaging from twitter in exactly some "correct" way is an important indicator of purity and virtue.)

@dan131riley@federate.social avatar

@mattblaze the xwitter dismount is a factor in your social media balance beam score (I probably shouldn’t post this, nobody will find it amusing)

@mattblaze I wonder what their criteria is? Clearly they're desperate to bring back their "influencers." I had a verified check before and was a "prominent figure" by whatever that subjective quality is. Mine has not got it back (yet), but I only had 14k followers.

I'm not going back, but I am curious what devious plan is being attempted.
