A shockingly large proportion of SV technosolutions are band-aids for the "problems" of a techbro who

  • drives to work alone
  • in an expensive car
  • with a good mobile connection
  • through silicon valley traffic

For example:

  • autonomous driving (or gig drivers)
  • food delivery; task rabbit
  • agents to read and respond to your email
  • voice assistants providing emotional validation

I’m incredibly proud of my wife Ayesha, owner of Equal Entrance, for having donated nearly $5000 of her small biz income to Gaza relief over the past 7 months.✊🏽

If you want to support her & support Gaza relief, follow her & check out her store below. Maybe get a Keiffyah.❤️

There was no answer when she called, so Campeau showed up at the downtown nursing home in Windsor last month. With the code for the front door's keypad taped nearby, she walked right in.
“I'm sorry, but it was disgusting,” she said.
The halls were cluttered, the rooms dirty and it took her 15 minutes to find a staffer, she said.

This adds up to a Labour-Tory coalition in Holyrood if an election was held tomorrow, doesn't it?

(Scarily, Labour policies are closer to Tory than they are to the SNP. And they have an intense tribal hate for the SNP. SNP/Green coalition would be a minority; LibDems unlikely to join and it would still leave them a seat short of a majority.)

About six months ago, I made multiple sets of refundable plane and hotel reservations at different places along the path of totality for Monday, every one of which is now forecast for heavy cloud cover.

Sorry, everyone in those places.

kataclyst,

@mattblaze We are very lucky that this one is drivable for us. All we had to do was wake up early on Wednesday to pound the Provincial Park online registration system. Right now, we have “a mix of sun and cloud.”

This is my second and Ian’s ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Were you on the plane that time at FC?

Our party will include dogs this year, so that will be interesting.

Something like 75%-80% of Democratic voters support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, including a strong majority of Jewish and Muslim Democrats, but the Biden administration and many Congressional Democrats could apparently care less, and that small pro-genocide minority stridently insist Biden is under no obligation to listen to the Democratic majority even if it may cost him "the most important election of our lives" against Trump.

I can’t believe I have to say this, but when starving people run at the few aid trucks that are allowed into their open air prison/barrel, they are not, in any way, “looting”.

Online media can be overwhelming. It's fragmented between countless services, websites, social networks, and apps.

You need an app that weaves together an overview of nearly everything that’s happening across all the different services you follow.

That’s our vision for Project Tapestry, the new Kickstarter we're launching today.

I see you don’t yet have a business plan. Will my personal information or behaviour ever be a part of how you make money?

8:55am to 4pm was the dead-of-winter time when my panels would begin offsetting the house load and charging the batteries, assuming of course a sunny day. Now it's 8:15am to 4:25pm, so it's slowly looking up!

kataclyst,
@kataclyst@spore.social avatar

@simplenomad Where are you located, if you don’t mind saying?

We are planning to add solar once we have a winter with the new heat pump under our belts. And are thinking about whether to also add some battery capacity.

kataclyst,
@kataclyst@spore.social avatar

@simplenomad Yeah, I think we’d have to find space in our basement. I understand that the lithium iron phosphate ones are safe enough to do that.

I just went through 2 weeks at 11°F to 41°F, most of it below freezing, in a house heated by one heat pump. It worked very well. New options work in even lower temperatures: https://www.cnet.com/home/energy-and-utilities/most-heat-pumps-slow-down-in-frigid-cold-new-models-shown-at-ces-could-change-that/

@thepoliticalcat @stshank The ones that are designated cold climate heat pumps
work well below zero.

kataclyst,
@kataclyst@spore.social avatar

@Natanox @thepoliticalcat @stshank No. There are cold climate air source (as opposed to ground source, aka geothermal, which is what you are talking about) heat pumps. Probably the most well known are the Mitsubishi HyperHeat models, but many other companies now have similar technology.

@regehr @fullyabstract You might consider building a catio if you have the space! We made an outdoor enclosure that is accessible through a cat flap in a basement window. Our cats love that they can go in and out as they please. We love that they aren’t killing birds and won’t get run over by cars.
