Have you thought at all, for even a minute, about the business model of OpenAI?

In one sentence: "We will take every actual human-created content, the golden egg, from everyone, without permission, and then we will use it to sell plausible made-up shit, simultaneously choking out the creation of all new human-created content, the goose."

Ponzi was vastly more sophisticated than this.

I've long regarded extractive capitalism as corrupt, but I had no idea they were all so stupid.

@GeePawHill my read on the business model is that the explicit goal is to enact digital feudalism, by inserting themselves into every tool of knowledge work or production. The idea is to own all the tools, and then rent them back to us. This is for the obvious benefit of simple rent seeking, and the less obvious benefit that they get to control what kinds of work are even possible to perform. The software equivalent of share cropping.

@GeePawHill The actual business model is "we will get stupid easily-impressed companies to put lots of money into our garbage, then spend it on toys".

@GeePawHill probably the most absurd thing of the entire proposal for me is how stunningly ineffective it is. Seriously, we take every single ounce of human written content and pour billions of dollars into it, analyzing it, categorizing it, and building a computational engine that requires an entire fucking rainforest of computers to run.

With the result of... "Not ready for primetime. Come back when it can be as useful as a 7 year old kid"

Really? That's the game changer?

@hazelweakly @GeePawHill Less useful than my kids were at 7. My youngest started teaching cell biology at 5.

@hazelweakly @GeePawHill apologists and evangelists keep saying things about emergent properties, but you’re starting with what is - to a first approximation - the sum total of human knowledge in the English language and you get… something that can do a passable shitpost poem about version control or spit out marketing drivel? Yes, that’s more than is obvious from the linear algebra and weights, but look where you started!

I feel like LLMs are our age's manifestation of "a hundred monkeys at a typewriter writing Shakespeare." Except it's non-deterministic automatons, an oxymoron if we needed one, spewing cheap, user aggrandizing knock offs.
