My husband would like me to "correct the narrative" because, while I did grow up less wealthy, I had my own bedroom while, for a period of time, he had to share a bedroom with his grandma. 😂
Had someone was very surprised when he learned his GF slept in the same bed as her brother... space is limited in the less fortunate here, I said you better get use to being poor, you will see plenty of it on a level here you have NEVER seen before!
@wlf_warren Oh, for real. I lived in a small apartment with my parents and I had a half brother from my father's previous marriage and, whenever my half brother would come visit, we had to share a bed. At the time, it wasn't weird. We were kids. But it is one of those things you look back on and are like oh that's sort of strange. But it was the space we had to work with so 🤷♀️.
@Alice Yeah my Mom went she came ( emigrated to the US) was a farm girl. They had a big bed and what could fit ( side-ways lol ) she had 11 brothers and sisters! Lost her Mom at 11 Dad at 13yo( my grandparents on her side) no such thing as adoption, each of the rest of the family took one kid in and raised them , my mom by my Aunt Mary. with 11 children she was already married by that time do to birth spread with the children. All this is normal and we thought nothing of it !
@Alice I grew up financially comfortable, but I never knew it at times because my parents would act as if we would lose everything in any moment. Plus many people had much more money in our community and I know my mother felt that. I don’t know if either applied to you husband growing up but it took me many years to appreciate how well we were off compared to many others.
@paulc That's honestly a very responsible and respectable perspective on your parents' part. I know WAY too many people who lost it all trying to "keep up with the Joneses."
@Alice my father was an engineer for Grumman Aerospace so we lived through threats of layoffs but I think my father was layoff proof. But I suspect it was more having lived through the Depression. My mother made sure we never lived beyond our means and she got a job so she could buy nice stuff. While my parents made me feel less well off at times I never had to worry about missing a meal. But my brother says that she did feel envy even though dishes was widely respected.
