speaking as a jew, it’s not antisemitic to call for the end of a genocide. it is antisemitic to use accusations of antisemitism as a cover for carrying out genocide

@exchgr yeah I deleted my replies when they started getting boosted. I'm not trying to be part of The Discourse.

@exchgr speaking as a Jew (this phrase gives you +100 HP, right?), why do you call this a genocide? If this war is a genocide, then all wars are genocide.

nadav,
@nadav@babka.social avatar

@nevo
I am here again to remind that my impression "as a Jew", is that people who convey opinions, do it out of internalized antisemitism. How surprising should it be that all too often their opinions have a seed of antisemitism in the least.

@nadav @nevo @exchgr

It's hard to find the point where they cross over from "internalized antisemitism" to "apikorus." But I'm pretty sure a lot of them are at or near the other side of it.

@nevo @exchgr

I have yet for any pro-hamas supporter to explain how if Israel is doing a "genocide" on muslims or arabs, then why are the Israeli mulsims and arabs NOT fleeing the country of Israel as fast as they can?

How odd they don't seem to be in any danger. Isn't the purpose of a genocide to exterminate an entire culture and religion?

No, they're just fine. They're still voting, running for office, holding office, going to uni, getting jobs, owning homes, and being free to be muslims, or atheists, or lgbtq - and women have the same rights as men. Imagine that.

They're not running away. Wonder why?

It's as if there isn't any genocide against Arab Muslims going on at all.

@shekinahcancook @nevo @exchgr i definitely do not like Hamas and consider October 7 terrorism on the scale of 9/11. But I also think Netanyahu's response has been too much--to wipe out all of Gaza? I am not sure if what is happening there fits the description of genocide. It does fit the description for war crimes. And anyone who is ok with Netanyahu killing 10,000+ children and destroying every university and hospital -- well I feel sorry for people with so little compassion in their hearts.

shekinahcancook,
@shekinahcancook@babka.social avatar

@Jennifer @nevo

The people with no mercy in their hearts are the ones laughing all the way to their swiss bank accounts from the influx of aid, and sacrificing their own people on the altar of war instead of just releasing the hostages, which they could have done at any time to stop the war.

War sucks. That's a fact. Europe was bombed to smithereens by the allies to dislodge the German troops in every town and village. The Germans could have surrendered to spare the civilians, too. But they didn't, because they were fanatics, just like hamas.

Fundamentalist Christians and Muslims do not care about others, they only care about money and power and complete control by their theocracy. Hamas could have stopped the war at any time, just by turning over the hostages to ANY international authority. Not to Israel, anybody. And they chose not to.

Hamas cannot be allowed to go on. No theocratic govt is legitimate, but one willing to rape & mutilate civilians must be eliminated. By whatever means.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@shekinahcancook @nevo by whatever means? To me that means you're ok with killing every single person in gaza just to make sure current members of hamas are killed. That is so incredibly short sighted. I mean seriously do you not remember the Iraq war? Great terrorist recruiting. Average people in Gaza, especially children, have no say about what Hamas does. Of course they should release hostages. But I'd be surprised if many are still alive considering the devastation.

shekinahcancook,
@shekinahcancook@babka.social avatar

@Jennifer @nevo

In your world, there is no way to wage war. You're fine if Jewish families get bombed by rockets every day. And apparently we're just supposed to sit here and take it?

The average people in Gaza were often the ones hiding the hostages. They could have been burning up the phones with tips to expose where both hamas and the hostages were.

But again, they chose not to, knowing what the consequences would be. They're fine with destroying Israel by whatever means are necessary.

You're complaining that we're fighting back. So bye now.

vy,
@vy@mastodon.social avatar

@exchgr Do people using this term believe that if the Israeli government was bent on actual genocide and had US support it would be unable to kill more than a few tens of thousands of people? I mean other countries routinely roll out more impressive "genocides"

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@vy @exchgr your argument is on the level of some Holocaust deniers, that since the Germans were so super efficient and skillful, then they would have managed to kill all the Jews if that was their intention. That many survived is seen by them as proof that Nazi Germany did not commit a genocide.

vy,
@vy@mastodon.social avatar

@toriver @exchgr Certainly not. Your argument is, on the other hand, on the level of people who say the Dresden bombing of WWII was genocidal.

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@vy @exchgr well, Dresden was not a conclave controlled by the allies (the way Israel controlled Gaza), and the allies did not target the refugees fleeing the destruction.

Face it, the systematic destruction of hospitals, universities and, well, people fleeing is hard to not call a genocide unless you are a heartless apologist. Israel knows where everyone in Gaza lives and could have sent in special forces to take out Hamas and rescue hostages. But vengeance was the goal.

vy,
@vy@mastodon.social avatar

@toriver @exchgr There is no way in the world that Israel could have sent in special forces against a well armed, organized and defended 30,000 + strong military force. You lost all credibility there.
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/how-hamas-secretly-built-mini-army-fight-israel-2023-10-13/

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@vy @exchgr So then mass murder is the solution? The Israeli military estimate that maybe 10% of the killed were Hamas. If someone abducted people in Tel Aviv and fled into a mall, would the IDF bomb the mall? No, because some people are "better" than others.

Israel had the chance for peace after the Oslo accords but chose to create an enemy. Because it has a cadre of politicians from right-wing US immigrants with no connection to the Holocaust, destroying good-will.

    “they want to do the bad thing to us, so we should do it to them before they get a chance” is some quite twisted logic

    exchgr,
    @exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

    the first rule of hostage situations is you don’t shoot at the guys who have the hostages because you’ll kill the hostages

    exchgr,
    @exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

    i agree we should get the (remaining) hostages home. and the quickest path runs through a ceasefire

    Alon,
    @Alon@mastodon.social avatar

    @exchgr Yes, and Hamas kept insisting on ridiculous preconditions - "you withdraw first, we'll then trickle some hostages over months and make additional demands for the others." Hamas has a track record of dragging the negotiations, as a kind of political conservation of ninjitsu, figuring the last hostage can be worth more concessions. One of the Hamas commanders Israel assassinated in Lebanon had even said that he'd hoped the negotiations for the release of Gilad Shalit would fail.

    KarunaX,
    @KarunaX@mastodon.world avatar

    @exchgr I hope all #hostages get home safely - those held by #Hamas (about 130, I believe) & the 9,500 held in #Israel prisons, many of them women & children (most not even charged, let alone tried in a civilian court). Some of these Israeli hostages have been tortured. Some have died from abuse & medical neglect by Israeli authorities. Some have been murdered. https://reliefweb.int/report/occupied-palestinian-territory/palestinian-prisoners-are-victims-torture-and-systematic-executions-international-organisations-are-silent-enarThis does is not the case with Hamas hostages, if we are to believe those Israeli hostages already released.
