Last friday, I have received a takedown request from a company representing Apple, requesting I remove a parody account that is Apple on my instance.
They are claiming that it attempts to "mislead users into believing that the account is sponsored by or affiliated with Apple when that is not the case".
I am convinced that the account was legally in the right as it was very obvious that it is a parody account, but unfortunately I am powerless against a gigacorporation in court as they could just financially ruin me if they feel like it.
Therefore, I would like to warn everyone NOT to create Apple parody accounts using Apple's logo and word mark on your instances, as this would be violating Apple's intellectual property and would waste the time and money of the law firm that actively scours the internet for these types of accounts! :neocat_o_o:
@lea You can be world-widely known comedian who mocks any big corporation throughout your whole career, but you can't be an average joe with very tiny audience without getting sued.
@lea@excds hm. I'm tempted to read "we are seeking assistance" as "we might not have a legal claim here", but can totally understand you preference of playing it safe.
@lea that reminds of the earlier internet days, with lots of personal websites. Volkswagen enthusiasts (mostly owners of Beetles and the old (hippy) vans) in the US received similar letters from legal reps of VWofA, requesting to take down logo's and the name Volkswagen. At the time, VWofA apparently was not interested in being associated with its own history. (A lot has changed since, with VW making several retro-inspired cars since...)
