molly0xfff,

the team behind Critical Role just launched its own subscription membership service called "Beacon"

pretty cool to see a creative team trying out a new model to give them so much control over their own content/platform

molly0xfff,

i'm sure it was a major and scary decision to branch out to their own platform, but the precarity of building on third-party platforms like twitch/youtube really can't be overstated

molly0xfff,

I've mostly only supported them through merch/etc since I'm always hopelessly behind on current seasons and don't need the early release, but now that it's going to them directly (and hopefully encouraging them and others to try these models) it's a no brainer sub

@molly0xfff I feel like Dimension 20 and Dropout did something similar and it seems to have worked out decently for them!

molly0xfff,

@geewee they did/do and I'm a huge fan of it!

One answer to that perennial problem is: don't. Start building with p2p as soon as you can and support those who are building platforms you might use in future, such as .

@molly0xfff I do not consume their content but I do thank them for causing the word “precarity” to enter my vocabulary, which macOS spell check doesn't know is a word.

@steveriggins @molly0xfff that’s because it is “precariousness”. But I’m taking “precarity” because if Cory Doctorow can give us “enshittification” then Molly totally gets a pass.

molly0xfff,
jimcullen,

@molly0xfff do we know how Beacon works under the hood? I've seen other independent creators do a similar thing using a Patreon white-label service called Memberful. Ad-free versions of their shows, access to their private Discord server, etc. And to the customer it looks like you've signed up for their service, as opposed to being a patron on Patreon.

molly0xfff,

@jimcullen based on how they're describing it I haven't gotten that impression

They seem like decent people, I hope this does well.

It has been working for dropout.tv and its d&d show dimension 20.

molly0xfff,

@ainmosni i ❤️ dropout

Only found out about it this winter, and I love their stuff, and the way its run.

Now if only their apps worked decently.

@molly0xfff watching them build their whole company has been pretty impressive.
