I went to a Turkish restaurant and I told the auntie ‘no rice please’ and she didn’t really speak English but she said ‘no no rice’ so now I have rice but hey it’s actually amazing rice (and genuinely one of the best Turkish restaurants I’ve been to, as good as in Turkey omg)

She also reminds me of all the Turkish aunties I know

(It’s called Muma Kitchen, west side LA)

@skinnylatte were you saying recently how much you like rice?

Was this just your temporary choice? I’m glad it was great!
-a (fellow?) rice fan

@zackstern yes, i just already had rice at a pre-lunch venue a few minutes before this one.

@skinnylatte Ooh what did you get? Might order this weekend.

@radhika Adana kebab and baklava. The baklava is excellent definitely don’t miss it. I think all the starters look great too

Everything does! (Kofte, beyti, iskender)

@skinnylatte hehehe, Turkish rice is awesome. Do they do it with the risoni?

I normally do my piyaz pilaf with risoni, but with or without, the key to good Turkish rice is embarrassing amounts of butter (and not washing the rice) 😆

@sortius yep the short rice. Omg it’s so good. The Adana kebab is also flame grilled and as fatty and gamey and tasty as I remember from Turkey

Haven’t had this quality of Turkish food elsewhere

@skinnylatte oh, no, risoni as in the pasta, mixed in with the rice.

My ex-partner's brother-in-law is a Turkish chef, from Gelibolu (Gallipoli), and he taught me some important things about Turkish cooking. The fat is like the #1 thing in Turkish food. It shouldn't be greasy, but it needs that fat to get those flavours.

They live for 100 years on the islands, so it can't be that bad for you 😆

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@sortius oh! No it’s just the rice in this one. Maybe there’s risoni in another dish. But yeah, very good.. they really have delicious food

I never loved a lot of Turkish food abroad as it tends to be meaty and dry, but after visiting a few times I appreciate that it’s all about the fresh ingredients and great Turkish food is.. worlds apart

@sortius I’m also obsessed with Refika’s kitchen recipes on YouTube

@sortius@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte I'll have to check her out, I'm always looking for more Turkish recipes, as I've got a number, but the kids aren't fans of most of them 😖

@sortius she has some kid friendly recipes could be fun. There’s a fun recipe for making a doner kebab at home by sticking seasoned meat in layers in your freezer and then slicing it off and pan frying it. Genius
