I'm super enjoying everyone discovering that the aurora looks almost nothing like it does in photos but is somehow even more magical once you learn how to see it. It's beautiful, isn't it?

If you think you can only see the northern lights from your phone, you're probably wrong, it's just it shows up differently to the camera. To see with your eyes, look at a star, shielding out any streetlights. Stare at that star, and out of the corners of your eyes you'll start to see bright patches that look like smoke or hazy bright clouds. That's it! Keep looking, not directly at it, and you'll begin to see streaks and ribbons, and subtle changes, sometimes a little bit of colour.
