What are your favorite non-monopoly places to shop online? Bonus if they're actually also really cool businesses?

Help folks discover non-Amazon, non-Walmart stores!

Ones I use include:

American Science & Surplus: https://sciplus.com/

Stonemountain & Daughter https://stonemountainfabric.com/

Davis Food Co-op (not mail order, but you can still do "curbside" pick-up) https://davisfood.coop/

@meganL I get the peach pit and corn cob dish scrubbers I love from Smallflower: https://www.smallflower.com/

Chocosphere for all things chocolate: https://www.chocosphere.com/

Bandcamp for music (although ownership has changed so who knows how long this will remain as good) https://bandcamp.com/

Lehman's for old-fashioned things like heavier duty clothesline tools and more. https://www.lehmans.com/

@meganL I have no idea what the company politics are like (google tells me they are privately held, with ~3K employees), but I am grateful for the existence of https://www.mcmaster.com/ It's an interesting case where I don't even know how I would look for most of the things I want to find on it via amazon or whatever.

@esnyder @meganL as an engineer, I use McMaster all the time, mostly because they have hands down the best e-commerce experience and its not even close. It's been great for a while and I just don't understand how all other online sales places are just so terrible still.

@esnyder @meganL fun fact, all of the product images used to be hand drawn (not sure how true this is at this point, maybe they have cool software to help now) to have the distinct styling and consistency

@DemonHusky @esnyder @meganL +1 for McMaster-Carr. I live near one of their facilities so I can just drive out there to pick up anything I order. It used to be that "shipping" was some guy from the factory showing up in his personal car on his way home from work with your stuff in the trunk. They do normal shipping with UPS or whomever these days, but it was always fun. Also if you ask sometimes they'll custom make some of the things they do in house if they don't have the measurements you need.

@DemonHusky @esnyder @meganL (they also sell some weird stuff you wouldn't expect like these awesome factory-floor cargo-trikes: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/tricycles/ )

WuMargaret,

@meganL Unsure if they are a cool business, but I really like xero shoes. Pricey, but comfortable and durable. https://xeroshoes.com/

@WuMargaret @meganL i tried other brands of barefoot shoes years ago, and my general takeaway was that they’re a great way to mess up your feet and calves. i’m sure you can do it safely, but it’s not intuitive and there’s a whole ton of ways to seriously hurt yourself
