My reason for moving: When Trump got in, I said to Mr. Laffy, "He'll now have the courts. We can't overcome a lot of that." This is what I was referring to:
#BREAKING: #SCOTUS upholds #SouthCarolina's congressional map, reversing a lower court decision that struck down the map for racial gerrymandering.
@GottaLaff
I have always understood why you made the decision and honestly, if I had the resources I would do the same thing. You read the situation clearly and earlier than most. I suspect you would rather have been wrong about this, but you weren't. You were spot on. I am looking forward to hearing about your new adventures in Canada.
@GottaLaff And Biden's gotten a ton of justices appointed to lower Federal courts...but this corrupt theocratic #Scotus majority is just reversing all of them. I can't even
Pointedly asking what prevents Biden from appointing a handful of judges anyway.
The number of judges on the court isn't mandated anywhere in the Constitution or by federal law. The number of justices is simply traditional. Rubio proposed an amendment to limit it to nine but good luck getting 2/3rds of Congress to agree to it. They haven't, not in the five years since it was proposed.
The fact that Rubio and Co even proposed the change shows they're aware of that hole in their defense. When your enemy shows you their cards, you take advantage.
@GottaLaff
I remember a time when republicans railed against what they called, "activist judges". Of course, those were judges who ruled in favor of civil rights, racial and gender equality, voting rights, etc.
@GottaLaff Damn Damn damn...Obama and Holder warned us......they've been working to fight it...but (FU #MitchMcConnell) they have the courts now....(not only #SCOTUS) Prepare for another hanging chad debacle. Fuk Fuk Fuk....and it's raining and had to cancel a whale watching trip til tomorrow...need to get off this computer...too much to take....10 30 too early for wine? Not on vacation. Good luck with the move!
@tinkb333 I understand what you're saying, and the unique aspect of a democratic republic is the opportunities for change that flip everything when we least expect it. I am holding my hope as the thing I'm responsible for along with my rights and privileges as a citizen. It's not easy to be a conscious citizen in any era, this one being among the most challenging I've lived through. I won't help them defeat me.
@GottaLaff We have friends who moved from Colorado to British Columbia a few months after Trump “won”. They were terrified he’d abolish gay marriage. They’ve been together for 30 years. Got married as soon as it was legal. Still live in Vancouver and said they won’t be returning to US unless the SCOTUS is remade democratic. Many of their friends and family told them they were overreacting. Not us. They and your family had the right amount of panic.
@GottaLaff It would be good see Dems gain a large majority in the House and Senate so they can impeach justices like Alito or amend the Constitution to create term limits subject to recall for misconduct. If and when that will happen, I have no idea. If Trump is elected again I suspect never.
I think you made a good choice.
I have been thinking of doing a move as well and I know a lot of others are thinking that way too.
I'm too old to go do battle these days.
