Just checked into a hotel because tomorrow I’m meeting a client for an early planning mtg. This hotel is new, so I thought it would be fine.

It has a bathroom sink the size of a shoebox, no hand towels, 2 tiny bath towels, no hangers, wifi is extra (so are the hand towels). It has a kitchenette but no plates, silverware, mugs - not even a coffee maker! You have to pay extra for all that. The plastic mattress sits on a platform 4” from the floor.

I have booked the Frontier Airlines of hotels!😒

@StillIRise1963 We can probably blame processed foods for lots of human health issues. Luckily for me, my parents never bought so much as a Twinkie, so I didn’t get hooked on those foods. Once in a great while we had hotdogs. Both of my parents cooked meals from scratch and there was very little that came from cans or boxes. Even dry beans were soaked and cooked, and they made noodles and hung them on a wrack. I’d trade my homemade cookies just to taste a Hostess pie during school lunch. 😁

Dining out has gotten ridiculous. We’ve cut way back, but last night we took our daughter out to dinner… two grilled salmon sandwiches that were mostly bread and an ahi rice bowl that was mostly rice, $96. Add a 20% wage adjustment for our server and we were at $115. Add 3 drinks and we were at $170.

@Skepticat It has gone up so quickly and to such ridiculous prices (often with sub-par service too) that everyone I know is eating out less. Add a going rate tip and you’re easily over $100 for 2 people. So many $40-$50 entrees now too!

@HelenLockhart I hate the service charges added! We were in a restaurant that didn’t mention anywhere on the menu that a 20% service charge was added to the bill. It was mentioned in tiny print at the bottom of the ticket, with a notation that it helped them pay a living wage to their service staff. The service was terrible. We couldn’t even get our water refilled or a second glass of wine. She finally showed up again to offer dessert. The 20% was calculated on the taxed total. 😐

@GottaLaff Having the baby will in no way be cheaper than having to get her daughter to an abortion clinic. The mental anguish that poor 13-year old child will endure could last a lifetime. We need to set up emergency funds for these kids if the parents can’t get them to a clinic to terminate. Chicago is a 13 hour drive from Biloxi. This is just me because I don’t know that mom’s story, but I would’ve driven my kid and slept in the car if I had to. I would’ve done anything necessary.

@jonpainterphoto You did the homework. They were voting in fear, which makes sense that the numbers would be so high. But lots of Germans were also very enthusiastic about what the Nazis promised. I see frightening parallels to the MAGAs and Trump.

You make a good point, and I may change how I deal with hostile and lecturing people. Once I feel like a block is necessary I usually hashtag it so folks reading the thread know that I cut off further communications. I often look at the profile of people others have announced they’re blocking to decide if I should proactively block a troll. It’s like telling a neighbor, “Guy across the street is an angry screamer. You may want to stay off his lawn.”

@samhainnight @gwaldby Luckily, the grandparents got out of Berlin 2 weeks before borders closed and eventually made it to the USA, where they started a family and became my kids' grandparents. Other family members did not get out in time. 😢

@samhainnight Yep. It was Kristallnacht that was the last straw for my former in-laws (now deceased). My father in-law was interviewed by the Shoah Foundation. He said that the day he knew they had to leave Berlin (he was a teen with a job) was when he went to a favorite bench in a park where he always ate his lunch, and there was a sign that read, "No dogs and no Jews." They fled to Paris, then La Paz, then Buenos Aires, then New York. My FIL spoke 6 languages by the time he was 25.
