loud sigh

So now you can’t even read a Twitter post unless you are logged in on a browser. What a ridiculous decision.

Robert_B_Barlow,

@gamingonlinux As good an excuse as any to get out of the habit of using it, I suppose.

@gamingonlinux This is REALLY RI-DI-CU-LO-US!

ahahhahah think that now I'll sign-up to read there various shit, ahahahahah bye bye 😃

tw1tch,

@gamingonlinux I just saw Elon Musk respond to criticism over this decision by saying there were hundreds of organizations scraping Twitter aggressively to the point of impacting the user experience.

Feneric,

@gamingonlinux Not just individual tweets, but all of Twitter seems broken for me unless logged in, and there doesn't seem a way to log in because it's broken...

meowki,

@gamingonlinux Well, it’s just a band aid but: Nitter is a nice workaround.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@gamingonlinux Nitter (proxy) might still be an option but it's bound to get broken eventually (hope not too fast the way things are going).

gorbay,
@gorbay@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux I wasn't keen on giving them any traffic anyway.

kontaidistro,

@gamingonlinux they really want to keep their tight grip on their user base it seems.
But I feel like this is somewhat scaring away people who are curious and passerby’s.

bigattck,

@gamingonlinux can’t download games without downloading steam client. These companies will never care about you. The data you willingly sign up is the same has twitter earning millions of dollars. Reject Valve being the “good guy” and twitter as a necessary part of internet. Both of these companies want money, not make you happy.

Kombatant,

@gamingonlinux With many public alert services on Twitter, imagine "please register to find out if the world is ending"

poundquerydotinfo,
@poundquerydotinfo@virctuary.com avatar

@gamingonlinux More evidence that people are fleeing Twitter I'm guessing.

tmh,

@gamingonlinux I keep up with a some Twitter via RSS feeds from nitter. https://read.whatever.social/ has been reliable for me.

irina,
@irina@wandering.shop avatar

@gamingonlinux This makes Twitter (which I left) as useless to me as Facebook (which I never got on).

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@gamingonlinux I got sick of this shit too.

Nitter is fantastic for getting around this. It even embeds in steam chat, unlike twitter lately. I have stuff auto redirect with the Privacy Redirect browser extension.

keen456,

@gamingonlinux looks like you can bypass it by switching your UserAgent: https://retr0.id/objects/17f6c11c-798d-40cc-86a0-1ffaeacef514

wook,
@wook@fosstodon.org avatar

@keen456 @gamingonlinux .. I can't see that retr0.id url. What is the working useragent?

keen456,

@wook @gamingonlinux Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko; compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html) Chrome/113.0.5672.127 Safari/537.36 is what's in the toot

glassbottommeg,
@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

@gamingonlinux Huh. That may single-handedly kill the site. They're vastly underestimating how much of Twitter was searching important tweets or passing tweets between people.

It undercuts the entire "social" part of the social network, heh.

juliancday,
@juliancday@writing.exchange avatar

@glassbottommeg @gamingonlinux I wish that were the case. The last nine months though have been seeing communities just tenaciously hanging on like nothing is happening, refusing to leave or even consider it. It's been driving me crazy. So many people just don't care how bad it gets, and I keep wondering what it's gonna take (I suspect: eventually being unable to block blue checks).

Salix,
@Salix@mastodonczech.cz avatar

@gamingonlinux You can use https://bird.makeup/ to feed Twitter account into Your Mastodon, or You can use https://nitter.net/ (or different instance). I use Nitter to get RSS from tweets. We'll see how long both solutions work giving Musk's chaotic changes in Twitter. 😉

axelrafn,
@axelrafn@hachyderm.io avatar

@gamingonlinux really? Well, that's the final nail I think.

belmikey,

@gamingonlinux The "trick" worked on me, because I wanted to get status updates about the @fastmail outage and they're not updating here very often. For various reasons, I shouldn't have bothered, and I don't think I'll be doing that again. For the most part, I'm not really missing Twitter.

trashheap,
DoomSlayer__,

@trashheap @gamingonlinux thanks for the tip! Installing immediately

Stephen304,
@Stephen304@layer8.space avatar

@trashheap @gamingonlinux According to this issue Nitter is also blocked from working: https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/issues/919

trashheap, (edited )

@Stephen304 @gamingonlinux Interesting my nitter rss feeds were working as of when I made that post. I checked before posting. Might be hitting some nitter instances later than others?

Also Nitter I thought I read was using twitter's own private APIs reverse engineered. Which should make it somewhat immune.

gabboman,

@gamingonlinux elon wants to save us from reding twitter
