It’s Time for Furries to Stop Using Telegram

I have been a begrudging user of Telegram for years simply because that's what all the other furries use. When I signed up, I held my nose and expressed my discontent at Telegram by selecting a username that's a dig at MTProto's inherent insecurity against chosen ciphertext attacks: IND_CCA3_Insecure. Art: CMYKat I wrote about Furries and Telegram before, and included some basic privacy recommendations.

@soatok been using Shelter (https://f-droid.org/packages/net.typeblog.shelter/) for years to isolate (begrudgingly) Telegram on Android. Also, plug for @GrapheneOS as a good choice for a privacy/security focused fork of Android.

these people deserve to be bullied and shunned

A reply from @PHolder to Technology Connections further down the line No I explicitly did NOT follow the human. Technology Connections is a BRAND. If he wants to spew psychobabble, he should create a different place/account to do it and leave the TECHNOLOGY brand out of it.

@xan @Xantw0 ditto. Come for the rubber drone object gas mask suctiony material, stay for the reflections on technology dystopia nobody actually wanted.

lads I never bothered looking at lshw output on my X1 Extreme Gen 4 to notice that I've got only one stick of 16GB DDR4, so of course I had to buy a second stick for that dual channel goodness. Now I have 32GB RAM, an unprecedented number for me.

Fediverse, what the hell do you do with this much RAM?

@octofloofy damn. I guess Nitter is truly dead :(

I used to run a node back when GraphQL endpoint was still available and you didn't need to run a guest account workaround.

It's a shame so many kinksters I used to get inspired by are still stuck on that hellsite :(

CI jobs for my ansible playbook have been broken for months due to some changes with GitHub Actions.
This took me down a rabbit hole to fix...

Long story short: Self-Hosted GitHub Actions runner, running on Proxmox with nested virtualization to run molecule tests using Vagrant against VirtualBox VMs. 🙃

@technotim does your TrueNAS installation have some sort of service that eventually starts to leak memory after a while? (FWIW, nothing in htop is telling me what's to blame)

18+ limedye, to mastodon
@limedye@rubber.social avatar

Kinda feel like using Twitter as my main instead of Mastodon. Mainly because it seems to me like the kink community has not grown significantly since I joined. It’s disappointing and discouraging. While I cherish the few connections I’ve made here, I would like to make more. Instance federation may or may not be related.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@limedye @dollmaidcrystal @NeiChrakai I've pretty much given up trying to convince people not only to migrate to Fedi but also to stay active. Most people's eyes glaze over the ethics of staying on the one platform where fascism has become rampant (and no rubber/kink echo chamber is safe) or the other platform that pinky-promises it will be different this time. I had at least one person flat out tell me he likes an algorithm to make decisions for him.

We're doomed.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@dollmaidcrystal @limedye @NeiChrakai "The Algorithm" tends to become background noise when larger issues of anti-/dark-patterns that commercial social media implements become extremely problematic. I've witnessed close friends getting sucked in on this for over a decade and develop cycles of depression over and over.

ICQ vs Teams. So very true. I'm probably going to have to get a new work computer with days of reconfig cos so much is not saved properly in our profiles cos Teams just Cannot Cope and is eating 97% of the RAM constantly even when not in a video call.

Image now ALT texted. I thought it was described but re-seeing my boost in timeline the image wasn't described, so can only assume I was having a stupid last night and you get this post instead.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@NatalyaD this isn't unique to Teams, but just about every electron-based application.

dollmaidcrystal, to random

I've been wondering if we may be hitting the end of the Social Media Age, and what that means for the fetish communities.

Advertisers are starting to lose interest in uncurated content, which is the entire point of classic social media models. Now, the plan is to move to algorithm-driven "you get to see THIS thing" designs, which are easier to control.

But uncurated content is how the kink community got people from "horny and curious" to actually learning. What other outreach would even work?

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@dollmaidcrystal holding out for "classics" like personal websites, blogs, RSS, and of course open protocols (e.g. fediverse) to support. Self hosting niche non monetisable things is always possible.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@dollmaidcrystal maybe it's up to us to teach each other how stuff works? I don't have a good solution (and not trying to), but I've been through enough Internet years to see things grow, get too big, and crash. And it's almost always the big platforms where people don't have much control over.

This will just keep happening.

@gsuberland @azonenberg can't argue with OLED I'm afraid. Except for the potential for screen burn-in. Are there any commercial display panels worth a consideration that are OLED?

Polling y'all IT and security people for my own amusement and frustration -

The very worst tech sales pitch you got this week:

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@hacks4pancakes vendor sent a "PoC Kickoff" meeting only after the first intro call. During the call they expected us to sign a NDA, without telling us how much their service would cost. When we asked about the cost, they asked us to sing the NDA. Not sure what the proof of concept was supposed to be - the NDA negotiations?

oh, neat, someone got the .NET runtime and SDK working on FreeBSD.

for now it needs the mlock permission enabled on the jail, until an upstream patch is applied to avoid a memory check on startup when mlock is unavailable, but that's a minor inconvenience.

so now I can write services in C# and run them natively in BSD jails instead of needing a whole Linux VM.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@gsuberland o_O link? This means I can also write helpful software for TrueNAS and opnSense which are both FreeBSD based.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@gsuberland huh, this seems to have been around for much longer than I thought!

Has everyone moved to Bluesky or something?

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@dollmaidcrystal quiet where/how?

If in kink, then it does seem so on my end, but I understand that largely depends on who I follow (if avoid paying attention to local timeline).

If in infosec, others, I haven't noticed a decrease in activity.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

Looking for one with a strong 4+core CPU and support for at least 128GB RAM.

@eric_capuano Supermicro makes a whole bunch of 1U chassis, https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/system/up/1u/sys-510p-m

I need an accurate human translation, not a machine translation, of this message. Probably benign but I've got absolutely no idea what it says, hence the CW & sensitive marking. I guess it's Russian but could be any of the Cyrillic script languages so I don't want to presume. Anyone know what it says?

SwiftOnSecurity, (edited ) to random

Here‘s my position on certs:
Their value is individual and what you make of them.
I see them as the greatest of a positive when correlated with other work and accomplishments and mission, in whatever position held.
They are also valuable to groups who benefit from validation of their skillsets. To get past gatekeepers.

Despite some sporadic complaints about credential-pushers, I will never negatively judge anyone for any certificate. That took determined directed effort to improve yourself. Seems obvious.

Hell, if you work in security and have an A+, I super respect that. It’s a way better cert than what a lot of older people grew up with.

“Ground floor” stuff others do not understand, paired with a striving for security excellence, carries immense weight with the right audiences. The most senior people people did not grow up with a “cyber pipeline.” They just worked as Helpdesk and Sysadmins. They’ve been there. Anyone you’re anxious about looking down on you probably isn’t shit and doesn’t have the professional cred you think.

Unfortunately I do not have advice on certs as career/HR gateways. Just I know they can be useful.

gearlicious,
@gearlicious@rubber.social avatar

@SwiftOnSecurity been bouncing around CCSP (or not), but the gatekeepers are annoying.

give it a compressed file and an uncompressed file. Generate an algorithm to get from one to another
