@geerlingguy Woah, the effect looks so strong! Have you used any of the recommended chelated plant nutrition? Mine is probably still recovering from being repotted and hadn't started glowing noticeably.

(Fediverse survey post, asking people to click on a web link to a Mastodon post and say what their app does with it.)

UPDATE: Aaaarrgghhhhhhh! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I had a number of people asking me for clarification of the poll, so I edited option wording, but this caused it to reset the responses to zero. I am so sorry! ๐Ÿฅด

The latest figures before I messed this up were this:

About 75% of people clicking on a link to a Mastodon post saw it displayed a normal post, 25% saw it displayed in a browser window.

I wanted to screen record Stories on Android, but the phone doesn't support that feature and only free sketchy apps exist, so I rigged up a mount and ended up making this https://mastodon.social/@pixelfed/111044678886486915

It's not perfect, but that's what gives it character ๐Ÿ˜‚

Stephen304,
@Stephen304@layer8.space avatar

@dansup I think it might be a lineage rom feature but I've found the screen record quick tile to be super useful for reporting app bugs. It's nice having it as an OS feature.

After some discussions, I will not be adding blocklist tracking to FediDB as I don't want it to be abused!

Stephen304,
@Stephen304@layer8.space avatar

@dansup That's unfortunate. When telling people about the fediverse, it's always embarrassing that the answer to "how do I avoid picking a server that's blocked by everyone" or "how do I pick a server that doesn't block the instances I want to reach" seems to be "visit each one and check for yourself". It's not ideal. I really wish for a database where I can enter a list of instances I want to follow people on and it will show me which instances can reach the most based on blocklist information.

dansup, to random
@dansup@mastodon.social avatar

In addition to making blocklists available via API in @pixelfed later today, I'll be adding support to view instance blocklists in FediDB!

Stephen304,
@Stephen304@layer8.space avatar

@dansup @pixelfed It would be great if this also showed the reverse metric - how many other instances block this one. That way people could get some visibility into which instances are widely blocked. Of course it might be vulnerable being gamed, so perhaps something like "blocked by x top-100 servers" or "blocked by servers representing x% of fediverse users", that way manipulating the metric would require spoofing a large number of users which would be more obvious.

Are you interested in VR these days?

Stephen304,
@Stephen304@layer8.space avatar

@boilingsteam I'm very interested but find the biggest barriers to regularly enjoying it are 1. not wanting to move much and 2. lack of replayable games - currently the only thing I regularly go back to is beatsaber and even then I spend the first 30-45 minutes of each play session trying to curate new custom songs to stay interested.

@mikey @gbhnews I like to say that you can build your own algorithm by following more people and hashtags and by visiting the trending page. These are means to discover content around specific interests, popular content, and see new faces, it's just not forced on people here by default.

    @notjustbikes It's a shame that you're having that experience. My experience has been very different maybe in part due to following just about every urbanist related account I could find, as well as a few hashtags like , , etc. My feed is alive and interesting, and there's no shortage of content to keep me engaged. I have no desire to go back to a walled garden where a single entity can make unilateral decisions about the platform.

    @dansup For those who don't know, these aren't instances so no user accounts are impacted. One is a stats site that tracks instance size/activity stats and the other is an informational getting started site. There are many others but I have to say fedidb.org was the best looking site for keeping track of instance size/growth and it will be missed!

    Edit: It looks like he changed his mind! Long live fedidb.org :)

    The original Chromecast hits end of life after a decade of service

    Google's most successful hardware product ever is no longer supported.

    Stephen304,
    @Stephen304@layer8.space avatar

    @arstechnica Probably has something to do with DRM being key to the Chromecast's ability to push ads and collect user data. The original is rootable IIRC, and the receiver API is locked down with baked in secret keys for DRM purposes. Pushing people to newer models ensures the only functional CCs are ones with no ability to circumvent hardcoded DNS and unblockable ads. This is timed well with the push for more ads as well as the blocking of original vanced app in the past week.
