Any reason to not scrub and recycle all my <= 2TB 3.5" SATA spinners? I generally keep old hardware forever but just can't imagine me ever using any of those again.

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

Thunderbolt drive dock is handy for this, connected to a mini.

Wished I had the OWC T2 one, but I've never found that one at a good price.

ShirtShanks,
@ShirtShanks@mastinsaan.in avatar

@paul Sir, that’s a toaster

andrewfelix,

@paul I bought 2 matching pairs for a cheap raid backup running off a 3rd gen i5. I underclocked the CPU so it just sips power. There are definitely people out there you would make use of these.

marcins,

@paul what’s your scrubbing method of choice? I also have a whole stack of old disks I should wipe at some point and dispose of.

zperretta,
@zperretta@techhub.social avatar

@paul Can I have some.... 👉👈

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I keep an eye on the sales for that one too. I have an ancient BlacX USB2 dock kicking around for bare drives.

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

Just as I finished wiping my last drive, I realized that I was wiping diskX and not rdiskX. Speed diff is about 2x and now I feel half more stupid than usual.

geekandi,

@paul

We only learn from mistakes :)

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

@geekandi not really learning since I already knew it and just forgot.

SeeS,
@SeeS@mastodon.nl avatar

@paul hear hear … you just learned something (again)

mkellis,

@paul You’re just refreshing the active cache after a cache miss.

erik,
@erik@infrageeks.social avatar

@paul So been there, so many times. Plus the internal debate once it’s been running for a while whether it’s worth hitting Ctrl-C and restarting with rdisk…

scm,
@scm@sfba.social avatar

@paul at least it wasn’t diskY by accident 😆

danhulton,
@danhulton@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul Not the worst mistake one can make when wiping drives...

bradfrank,

@paul if recycling > cost I’ve used https://www.protekebox.com/shop/ with great success for years.

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

Ended up with this pile of drive e-waste. Hope Best Buy still has a drop off.

frumble,
@frumble@chaos.social avatar

@paul If they aren’t broken, why not just give them away?

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

@frumble what am I going to do stand on the street corner and hand them out? 🤪

frumble,
@frumble@chaos.social avatar

@paul Isn’t Craigslist the give-away market in the US? ^^

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

@frumble I've read enough /r/choosingbeggars stories that I'll never do that.

filmfreak75,

@paul had to pay a service to take mine last time — granted, it included a 36” CRT TV and there was no way i was dragging that somewhere

fluffery,

@paul i know at best buy there is a box of used electronics that are going to be thrown out, i usually steal alot of that box

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

@fluffery I didn't know it was a take one leave one box.

fluffery,

@paul its not supposed to be

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

@fluffery what kind of stuff did you get?

michaelwaggoner,

@paul I'll pay for shipping to get them, looking to build a NAS for home.

onyxraven,
@onyxraven@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul yes but they only take '3 pieces' at a time (per month?) Staples has similar (6 pieces).

MinPinManor,

@paul they might dunk on you

I’ve dropped off laptops and had them make fun of me for how old they are

Still, better than other alternatives

Nitro230,

@paul pretty sure staples still does if Best Buy doesn’t.

tebrown,

@paul I think it’s 3 items per day per household. Please let us know if that is accurate or not!

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@paul your city will likely have a drive through drop off point for e-waste. Give google a try. Many are only on weekends, at least in Los Angeles.

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@paul You can wipe them and donate them to a local charity that builds systems for folks. Most cities have at least one.

hpridham,
@hpridham@mastodon.world avatar

@paul same boat.

jonmichaels,

@paul Burn them. (Not literally, that would be a hazard.)

There are those of us who keep things around “just in case.” I have a similar collection.

There comes that time to move on. Keep the one or two for the “just in case” and then part with the rest.

Based on your recent posts I recently set up my old editing workhorse trashcan as a server and have been consolidating the data on those small drives to a large array. (I’m staying MacOS for my own comfort level.)

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@paul make a copy of some stuff and send them in a padded box to various relatives for safe keeping. Just in case.

PenguinToot,
@PenguinToot@twit.social avatar

@paul I did that recently & dropped them all off at Staples for recycling (I hope). Replaced any I might have re-used with SSD 🙂

Barkoded,

@paul if they still work then it is a gem for retro computing where SSD isn’t a thing (like really old versions of macOS/OSX).

icing,
@icing@chaos.social avatar

@paul The platters inside can be made into deadly shurikens after the upcoming civilization meltdown.

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@paul as my spinners get old I buy cases like the ones below and keep them for long term storage of projects that are not crucial, but worth keeping around just in case.

ORICO 5 Packs 3.5inch Hard Drive Case Protective Box Storage Case Cover Organization Shell for Shockproof Slashproof and Dustproof for Gray-PHI-5S https://a.co/d/cz6SHPH

SpaceLifeForm,

@paul

I would keep if you have a computer they will work in.

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I tend to hold onto my old drives just because it’s kind of fun to have a snapshot of what I was doing at a certain point in time. Plus it’s theoretically another (old) offline backup in case of utter disaster such as ransomware that gets all my current data. But in truth it’s probably silly and pointless since I have multiple dedicated backup drives plus Backblaze.

joelman,
@joelman@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I usually disassemble and turn the platters into drink coasters. Shiny! And the locking magnets are powerful. One can easily hold up a thick calendar on the fridge

tcook,
@tcook@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul The ratio of power they require to capacity is probably terrible these days. I recently did a deep wipe, drilled holes through the platters, then e-wasted a few of this size that were on a shelf.

chrisatzinger,
@chrisatzinger@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I too have nearly every drive I’ve used. What app are you using to wipe?

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

@chrisatzinger I'm using scrub, but I'm sure dd would be fine.

pingje,

@paul scrub and e-waste I think

xtracer,

@paul I removed all those old drives from my house. It was because a couple died in my NAS, but replacing with NVME felt great.

Spinning drives in this house: 0

tezoatlipoca,
@tezoatlipoca@mas.to avatar

@paul There are groups who refurb computers for those in need, schools, shelters whatnot. Worth checking for one in your area.

RikRipper,
@RikRipper@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I wouldn’t. Those old drives are so easy to damage. Even if you found a use for them, they likely wouldn’t last long.

xerxesshouldnthavewon,
@xerxesshouldnthavewon@fosstodon.org avatar

@paul I'd get the magnets and then recycle tbh 😅 But I really like magnets...

fullpwn,

@paul thats uhh. alot of storage omg. @kirb i need this alot. windows update archive location?
