We smelled gas in our house, so now the fire department is here in full gear with masks and oxygen, and they’re clearing the house.

They smell it too, so at least I don’t feel like I’m crazy. Much excitement!

@grammargirl Our gas company in Los Angeles tells us to contact them. Great to know that the fire department takes to those calls.

Paul Auster, writer of “Smoke” and many other masterful stories about New York, passed away yesterday. Overseas, it is one of the main headlines of the day.

In the US, not even The New York Times, could be bothered to mention it.

I don’t often share the fanblogs, but this is a good look behind the scenes: Elon Musk has been absent from Tesla for the past year, but now he’s reasserting himself by doing mass layoffs with little regard for the effects on the business. It’s a mess.

Is this for real? Did Elon just lay off ’s entire Supercharger business division?

“Rebecca Tinucci, senior director of the electric vehicle maker's Supercharger business, and Daniel Ho, head of the new vehicles program, will leave on Tuesday morning, the report said.

Musk also plans to dismiss everyone working for Tinucci and Ho, including the roughly 500 employees who work in the Supercharger group, The Information said. It was not clear how many employees worked for Ho.”

The Supercharger system is probably Tesla’s most beloved and successful product. What is going on?

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@drahardja Yes, it seems to be for real. And if there are any circumstances to make it not be an absolutely deranged move, I can’t think of them.

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@yatil @drahardja Some have been saying that Musk is gutting the company to secure a vote in favor of his compensation package. By removing key talent, he becomes more crucial and has more leverage.

It sounded nuts at first, but now it is becoming the only explanation that makes sense.

When I see people worrying about WW III and nuclear war, this quote (usually attributed falsely to Khrushchev) comes to mind: (from Nikolay Chukovsky)

"А те из вас, кто останется в живых, позавидуют мертвым!"

"Those of you who will be still alive will envy the dead"

i.e. forget about any real preparation you can do for that kind of thing (or war, for that matter).

(Although, one wonders if they did a remarkably good job of timing the launch of the "Fallout" TV series).

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@zalasur @paulc @ai6yr Very well put. We tend to see ourselves as the 20% who would survive, not as the 80% who would be gone in the first few minutes.

So people “glamorize” civilization ending events and prepare to become the heroes of their Mad Max movie, forgetting more useful approaches like, you know, prevention.

LOL The other "wrong key" story for me was in 2018 or 2019, when I ended up driving to a motel along old Route 66 and got room "6", took a shower, and collapsed in bed exhausted. A couple of hours later I was woken up by someone who ALSO had the key to room "6" and it ended up I had actually checked into "Room 9" but the key also worked for "Room 6". We just traded keys (not that we needed to, LOL).

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr When visiting Xian in 2010, the hotel randomly gave us an absurdly large suite, rather than a regular room. Later that evening, as I was in the shower, someone just walked into the room, saw that I was there and walked away without saying anything. Then we got a call to tell us that the room was needed and we had to move to a different one.

Moral of the story: there are not such things as “keys” in China.

Although not all here on the lefty-leaning Fediverse like the brand of the cargo pants I like (tactical-style pants favored by law enforcement), I must say buying them used off eBay is a bargain. Lots of departments use them as uniform pants, but they have to be spotless, so there are a lot of "pants are perfect except for an ink stain on the leg" inventory out there.

My computer failed tonight, and I lost the entire hard drive. Fortunately, I have everything doubly backed up: once on a local hard drive and once on a cloud service. It's still stressful, but it could be a lot worse.

Consider this your reminder to back up your computer.

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@grammargirl A great reminder to not just have one, but two backups. I lost most of my early work samples when my hard drive failed, and then the backup drive also failed as I plugged it to get the files. It turns out there was a problem with the power outlet.
