are sunflower seeds supposed to taste and feel like wood splinters, or is this because i bought the super duper cheap ones? :neofox_not_like_this_derp:

    @ginny hehehe i'm glad it brought you joy!!! :bugcat_love: and yeah, that last part was described by @Mlep as "passing a pine cone", which is both hilarious and terrifying :doge_laugh: :skull_laugh:

  • nuz,

    @ginny awwwww i didn't interpret what you originally said in a negative way at all, but thank you for clarifying!! :hug_love: :bugcat_love: (and the fact that it made you smile makes me smile, and i hope you feel less anxious now!!) :blobhaj_heart: :lots_of_love:

    IowaMan,

    @nuz I'm wondering the same because I just had some but the first time in years and I don't remember them being anywhere near this woody

    nuz, (edited )

    @IowaMan i was definitely doing it wrong and you might be too (unless you like the woodiness, in which case the only thing you'll need to worry about is how they'll feel on the way out)! 🤭

    @nuz I’m glad you were brave enough to ask

    @melsaywhat@mstdn.games avatar

    @nuz
    I said what but now that I think about it you have a point.

    riley,

    @nuz: I'm not entirely sure, but I think that roasted sunflower seeds might become slightly open, kind of like pistachios.

    SunnJax,

    @nuz Maybe you were shopping in the pet aisle and got the ones for birds by accident?

    nuz,

    @SunnJax honestly those look WAY easier to eat, i totally should have gotten those instead :dracthyr_laugh:

    SunnJax,

    @nuz I’m sorry you were eating the shells, but thank you for a good laugh. 🤣

    CAETFOOD,

    @nuz they're probably no good seeds

    @nuz @lisamelton erghh, I am unsure how to vote here. They are not supposed to taste and feel like wood splinters, so no. Might it be because you bought cheap ones, which might have lower quality, I suspect yes.

    Let’s go with what?

    gwync,
    @gwync@mastodon.coffee avatar

    @nuz no, they're awesome unless stale or full of hulls.

    PatrickoftheG,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @nuz Are you just chewing it whole, friend? Yes they taste like wood if you eat the shells.

    Don't eat the shells.

    Enjoy your new sunflower experience once you get one of these.

    riley,

    @nuz: Are you sure it's not the taste of the seed's shells?

    nuz,

    omg i am totally EATING THE SHELLS

    mivox,
    @mivox@mivox.net avatar

    @nuz Thaaaat would explain it! 😆

    nuz,

    follow-up question: these are supposedly chili-lime flavored, but the flavoring is ON THE SHELLS

    what do??? :neofox_think_derp:

    salad_bar_breath,
    @salad_bar_breath@todon.nl avatar

    @nuz lol you are supposed to crack the shell with your teeth and then spit it. This will allow you to get the flavoring in your mouth

    ferretbreeder,

    @nuz Maybe I'm just a freak but I consider the wood splinter mouth feel a feature and not a bug 🤷‍♀️

    nuz, (edited )

    okay am i supposed to crack them along a specific axis or like ???

    i tried to crack them in my mouth, but they got soggy super quickly and turned into mushy wood splinters so i just gave up and swallowed them again

    i tried to crack them with my fingers, but they just kinda exploded everywhere and now there are splintery shell bits all over my desk

    how many more dark secrets must i learn to conquer the sunflower seeds????? :neofox_not_like_this_derp: :neofox_not_like_this_derp: :neofox_not_like_this_derp:

    puzzler,

    @nuz also this whole thread is hilarious and cute :bear_love:

    jepyang,
    @jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

    @nuz It’s definitely a learned skill. You pop the sunflower seed in your mouth. Maneuver it to your molars as you enjoy the flavor dust. Bite down on it along the edge to crack it open. Simultaneously eat the inner seed while maneuvering shell back to the front of your mouth. Depending on context, either take the shell out with your fingers and discard it, or spit it out on the ground.

    ampersand,

    @nuz Try orienting it longways between your teeth on the edge. That should split it open without smooshing it

    ampersand,

    @nuz Diagram

    nuz,

    @ampersand omg THANK YOU :bugcat_love:

    ZahmbieND,
    @ZahmbieND@hachyderm.io avatar

    @nuz I usually suck on the outside for a bit to get the flavoring, then put the "sharp" edge between my teeth (not the point, but not the flat part either) and bite down gently until it cracks apart. Then it usually splits into 3 pieces, the 2 shell pieces can be spit out, and eat the "meat" of the seed from the inside. It helps to have a cup or large napkin to spit the shells into.

    nuz,

    UPDATE: i have learned how to properly crack and eat sunflower seeds (thanks to everyone in this thread :bugcat_love:)!!! :corgi_yay:

    i also cleaned up all the shell bits and other evidence of my prior failures, then asked @jaden if he wanted to try one... :drgn_evil_giggle:

    ... and he ate the shell too!!! we're both silly gooses :blob_couple: :neofox_pat_derp:

    we've also both decided that (properly) eating sunflower seeds is Too Much Effort. WHEW my jaw is tired :bugcat_wiggle:

    anyway, thank you all for coming along with me on this silly journey and teaching me how to eat those silly seeds :patrick_love:

    oksohearmeout,

    @nuz @jaden there are people that eat peanuts in the shell and potatoes raw. If you like the shells you do you, boo. Eat the shells. Put pineapple on pizza. Ice cream IS a breakfast food. Be free with your food fetishes.

    nathanlovestrees,
    @nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

    @nuz @jaden it is a lot of work and kinda annoying! Most of the people I know who do it are trying to or have quit smoking and use it as a way to help with that

    sylkykat,
    @sylkykat@idic.social avatar

    @nuz I agree that eating sunflower seeds with the shells still on is too much effort. I buy them already shelled. May cost a littlemore, but worth it. @jaden

    @nuz

    I'm glad you figured out to not eat the shells because I once did that with pumpkin seeds and got stabbed in the throat 😅

    MelsGarden,

    @nuz this whole thread was so fun to scroll thru - I love how many people left you such detailed explanations!

    (fwiw - your first few posts is exactly why I don't like toasted pumpkin seeds. I've never figured out how I'm supposed to eat those things bc you can't crack them open & it's exactly like chewing wood splinters!
    😂)

    nuz,

    @MelsGarden ikr - people on here are literally the best (including you, ofc)!!! :hug_love: :bugcat_hearts:

    and yeah, these are supposedly "delicately roasted" but are still ridiculously hard to open (for a noob like me)! i'd have no chance against even more roasted/toasted ones :skull_laugh:

    MelsGarden,

    @nuz thank you! and back at you! 💚

    I'm starting to see a lot of cutie folks in my timeline (replies & boosts). People seem so nice & friendly on your server!

    And did I see 8000 character limits...? bc omg that's amazing!

    pathfinder,

    @MelsGarden @nuz
    It was easy, make the leap.:bear_flowers:

    nuz,

    @MelsGarden yessssss!!!!!! :bugcat_love: :lots_of_love: you have friends here already, and the people you haven't met will absolutely love you too! :frog_hug: (fun fact: you're our third most-followed account on universeodon, right after... george takei and god! :giggle: :birb_heart:)

    @pathfinder

    MelsGarden,

    @nuz Oh wow that's amazing!

    (side note: god is on Mastodon? Lol gotta admit that kinda makes me giggle. I knew god was on twitter. This still cracks me up - last time I looked god was only following one person there & it's Justin Bieber 😂 )

    I'm still torn about moving. There's so much I really do like about universeodon. But I'm thinking about it...very very seriously 💚

    @pathfinder

    Tattie,

    @nuz this was a heck of a toot to see sans context. Especially coming out of a different conversation about trans eggs...

    nuz,

    @Tattie omg LOL i hadn't considered that, but you're so right!!! it works so well until i give it away with the last line :patrick_laugh:

    ampersand,

    @nuz Call the factory and demand they flavor the seeds

    riley, (edited )

    @nuz: Some people gnaw on them, and just spit the shells out. That sort of thing is why spittoons used to once be a mark of high culture.

    If I understand the sunflower seed tech correctly, the internals can't actually be flavoured if they're still inside the shells, so if you want them pre-flavoured and the flavour to be on the seeds proper, you'll need to get them pre-shelled and flavoured after the shells are removed. There's probably some sort of industrial process that can remove the hulls on large scale, because I'm pretty sure that I have seen shelled sunflower seeds on sale somewhere.

    Kilo for kilo, shelled seeds would be more expensive because the weight of the shells will have been removed.

    puzzler,

    @nuz @riley you 100% can get shelled ones. They go from large and black to small little beige seeds

    Mlep,
    @Mlep@retro.pizza avatar

    @nuz ok look, I ate an entire bag WITH SHELLS once and when it came time for # 2, I learned why that was a BAD IDEA lol

    nuz,

    @Mlep oh noooooooooooooooo LOL :skull_laugh: i'm glad i asked on here after only eating like... a handful :drgn_laugh_sweat:

    Mlep,
    @Mlep@retro.pizza avatar

    @nuz Yes, if you've ever dreamed of passing a pine cone, eat all the shells lol😅

    @nuz Spoiler alert:

    It's because you didn't crack the shells off

    raphaelmorgan,

    @nuz I would answer but I propbably have only had the cheap ones so idk
    They always did to me tho except salty

    nathanlovestrees,
    @nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

    @nuz shelled or unshelled???

    rune,

    @nuz my gut instinct is that you ate the shell and i don't think you're supposed to???

    rune,

    @nuz pale beige smol thing on the left: eat

    bigger hard black & white striped shell: do not eat

    i've bitten them before (trying to figure out how to get the edible part out i think lol) and that's the closest thing i would think of as feeling like biting wood, lol.

    the edible part could taste like wood to you theoretically??? but in my opinion it's basically the consistency of a soft nut (think cashews but tiny).

    if you ARE eating the inside and not the shell, and it feels like a wood splinter or something,

    A B O R T

    nuz,

    @rune this image should be on every bag of sunflower seeds for silly gooses like me LMAO :zerotwo_laugh:

    rune,

    honestly i feel that for so many foods :doge_laugh: how are we supposed to know?!?!

    i certainly did not know how to shell them and always got pre-shelled ones and have already learned from this thread as well xD
