Weekend reading: I wrote about how mainstream commentators constantly raise the specter of 1968 to denounce the student protests - willfully ignoring the long pattern of leftwing student movements acting as an indispensable corrective.

Some thoughts from this week’s piece:

@tzimmer_history This was exactly my take on youth movements at that time: we were demanding that society live up to its ideals, not pretend that lip service was sufficient.

While some American universities remove peace demonstrators by force, Chancellor of UC Riverside, Kim Wilcox, peacefully reached an agreement with protestors, on how to ensure university investments and university study abroad programs are brought in line with university ethics standards. An agreement which specifically mentions the ending of programs in Israel.

The students have decided to end their protest, as can be seen in the attached video. Full agreement text:

@FrankFrank @randahl Are you describing committing genocide as a Western value? I guess there is a long history of European colonizers committing genocide on the indigenous people of areas they want to annex, so I have to give that one to you.

Analysis

"Nearly 100% of Campus Gaza Protests Have Been Peaceful"

Of 553 US campus protests, 97% remained non-violent.

Of the 3%, half were from clashes with police sent in to clear peaceful protests.

"If someone is speaking more about 'violent encampments' than they are about violent genocide of the Palestinians, they have a problem reflective of deep and dangerous biases."

@DrALJONES 97% of BLM demonstrations were peaceful, the ones that weren't were mostly the victims of attacks, but that has had no effect on the rhetoric about cities in flames which we are still seeing.

Hey literature people--

So, I was reading HG Wells and I noticed something I hadn't thought about. He writes in a style that's very weird, and but for the Victorian/Edwardian language might even be considered experimental now? Like, in The War in the Air, it regularly alternates between goofy comedic scenes and scenes of horror and violence. And in between THAT there are digressions about economics and engineering technology. (1/n)

jhavok,

@ZachWeinersmith I read Wells at 12 years old so I missed that. I think I'll revisit.

Big Journalism's timidity is never more obvious than when, confronted with a blatant lie from a (usually Republican) politician, the news org then frames the lie as a mere mistake.

Example today from ABC News -- headline:

Come on, journalists, this just makes you look ridiculous.
