This is an exceptionally informed and insightful post. I urge everyone to read it twice.

You’re So Vain, You Probably Think This App Is… | Coyote Tracks

goldretrieverus,

@shoq actually Threads is working w Mastodon- via to be short of Web 3 compliant- searchable.

natriumchloride,

@shoq this feels like a realistic take because i also couldn't really process why would meta care about extinguishing the fediverse when it's a very tiny fish compared to them

wolfj,

@shoq
OK. Threads is not about Mastodon, it is about Meta.
What's Mastodon about?
Upholding your right on your own online identity.
What's Meta about?
Establishing a global monopoly on everybody's online identities.

The argument that ActivityPub may help them with regulatory obstacles is totally weak.
They encounter very few obstacles outside the EU, and in the EU, this won't do it.

stephenesherman,

@shoq Great read! "At the end of the day, I’m a Mastodon partisan. But I don’t love its collective tendency toward self-important dogmatism. I’ve seen more than one friend get set up only to pull back, worrying there are dozens of unwritten rules about content warnings and alt text and linking and boosting they will constantly be put on blast over. "

headlessjimothy,

@shoq Sorry, but this Threads app wants to know way too much. One thing in particular has never been collected by other apps.

daffodil11,

@shoq thanks for sharing - gone down a deep fediverse rabbit hole and wasn’t sure if I agreed with the hardcore defederation with meta line of thought. This sums it up perfectly: “The truly toxic idea, though, is that Mastodon instances should not only refuse to federate with Threads, but they should refuse to federate with other servers that do federate with Threads.” - no one should punish the end user, it would be to the detriment of the decentralized movement
