IDF spokesperson:

From the analysis of the operational systems of the IDF, an enemy rocket barrage was carried out towards Israel, which passed in the vicinity of the hospital, when it was hit.
According to intelligence information, from several sources we have, the GAP organization is responsible for the failed shooting that hit the hospital.

stephenesherman,

@Free_Press Over the past two weeks, the Israelis have dropped tens of thousands of bombs on Gaza, but I suppose this particular one was a Hamas rocket gone astray.

CNBC: Elon Musk says Twitter, now X, is moving to monthly subscription fees >>> https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/18/musk-says-twitter-now-x-is-moving-to-monthly-subscriptions.html

"Among other things, Musk said the social network is 'moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X system...'"

Wonder how that's going to work out?

subway hot take: the A train should be extended to .

There are already tracks under 207 St to access the yard, and those could be extended under Fordham Road, connecting to the 1, 4, and D trains and all three lines.

Some justifications:

  • follows the route of the high-ridership Bx12 select bus
  • finally offers a direct connection between Washington Heights and the Bronx
  • would have made it way easier for me to get to the Fordham Metro-North station this morning
stephenesherman,

@evannakita great idea, also making it much easier for Westchester residents, via Metro North, to get to Washington Heights and UWS.

Full text search has been merged in main branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉

It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time.

We plan to deploy it to mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the coming days to have a bit more feedback on it and see how it behaves in the wild.

Over the last day this account has been conducting a demonstration experiment boosting breaking news and analysis related to Trump's Georgia racketeering to show how Mastodon has become an excellent source for real time breaking news and to provide newshounds with good accounts to follow. In a way, this demonstration has been too successful. Followers who may not be interested are getting spammed on this topic. That was not the intent, and apologies. As of now, the experiment is concluded.

Ukraine has captured a Russian stronghold on the southern front in the 78th week of the war – a possible indication that after months of painstaking assaults, they have broken through the hard shell of some of Russia’s front-line defences.

The letter yogh was used in Older Scots, representing 'y'. It looked like this Ȝ ȝ, so when printing took off, printers often used 'z' when yogh was not available in their fonts.

A famous example is the name 'Menzies' which is pronounced like 'Ming-is'. Based on that, please enjoy 2 different ways to read this rhyme.

'There once was a lassie named Menzies,
Who askit her aunt whit this thenzies.
Said her aunt wi a gasp,
"Dear Me, it's a wasp",
An you're haudin the end whaur the stenzies!'

stephenesherman,

@kristiedegaris I got brownie points in a course for fitting my IBM Selectric with custom-bought ‘yogh’ and ‘thorn’ keys.

stephenesherman,

@kristiedegaris 1975. The Selectric had two? replaceable keys. You could go to Whitlock’s Typewriter store, right on campus, and choose from dozens of specialty keys, that you could easily pop onto your typewriter. Lol

For anyone who's come over to the from : One of the first things I did when coming here was seek out a bunch of to follow, so my TL could mimic the "current events" feed. Here's a curated Google Sheet listing over a thousand journalists who've made accounts over here, who cover all sorts of things from cycling to sports to breaking news. Use it to help populate your , broadly for exposure.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14vfonxtyy0JFDxu5dZOZo-yAJrRXcu2lZ33atkFb7GM/edit#gid=0

stephenesherman,

@colemankane There over 1300 names on that spreadsheet. I started to wade in, quite enthused ... I followed three and then realized that two of them are inactive here. It's a good resource, but would require a fair amount of time to select journalists of interest and then check for inactivity (all done within Masto's two-step foreign-follow process).

Russia is a magical land where no prominent public figure has sided with Prigozhin, and yet his mercenary convoy seems to be cruising through cities, seizing military installations almost unmolested en route to Moscow.

Meta is planning to release its Twitter competitor in mid July, I’m told. It will eventually hook into Mastodon/ActivityPub but not at first. https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/23/23771599/command-line-musk-versus-zuckerberg

stephenesherman,

@alexeheath So instance admins who loathe , who dislike its content policies, and who don't want their loads exponentially increased .. will be ... compelled to federate with Meta ...because .. why??? (I must completely misunderstand mastodon's design. Or, its primary feature is felt to be wholly inadequate by its most vehement proponents.)

I want to apologize again for the sudden block from mstdn to .art💔

Some say it's because they where bashing on meta but that's untrue.

The admin was spreading mis information about the discussion that only fueled the fire and not the discussion with knowing any of the facts

If a "user" does this we can handle accordingly but when an admin does this it's getting worrisome

We should not figh each other but rather talk about it like adults, and also I am to blame in this

It won't happen again

stephenesherman,

@wiredfire @stux So some admins are as fractious, opinionated, quick-to-overreact, etc., as any other cross-section of humanity.
