And Then Satan Said:

We are going to separate into breakout groups of five people, after 8 min. each group will present what they discussed in the main group.

@futurebird Did this my first time in a growing company. I was foolish and young and thought we really were meant to do something.

As each of our breakout groups was working on "it's idea" for our assigned topic, the BSD came around and and "discussed" our topic.

It became clear that we as a breakout weren't there to come up with anything other than the piece of the pre-determined plan we'd been assigned -- seemingly on our own.

It was idea "dissemination" not "generation" at all.

FtRupertTed,

@FirefighterGeek @futurebird I have a similar experience. Being unaware of corporate speak at the time we were asked to “blue sky” some new ideas. After coming up with some great ones we were told to implement them…with no new budget. Never fell for that again.

@futurebird After 5-6 minutes, Satan starts circling the room, asking each group how it's coming along, reminding them of the amount of time left.

    @bencourtice

    that might be the intention-- but those who run mass meetings don't want to stir things up which is fine mostly, I rarely have the energy to do the stirring) a tendency to incorporate the general shape of the exercise, but not the spirit. Bland questions, not enough time.

    Functionally? They are used more to break up long meetings, fill time, & to let people in big orgs get to know each other.

    Only the time wasting is really "evil"

    & introverts HATE "getting to know" people.

    @bencourtice

    Mass adoption of "breakout groups" came from a good impulse to break up a "one to many" dynamic-- give bottom-up consensus building a chance.

    They end up being hated because they don't really do this 90% of the time.

    Saying you want to "build bottom up consensus" & really being open to the change and challenges it can produce are very separate things.

    What breakout groups can do even when poorly implemented is fill up a schedule with "activity" -- so they are here to stay.

    @futurebird @bencourtice Don’t they also afford a smaller social space for people who don’t feel comfortable speaking up in a large gathering, but do feel able to share thoughts in a more intimate setting? And a chance to let thoughts percolate, for those who are slower thinkers? I have interpreted this structure as being about inclusion more than anything else
