And, to be fair, depending on the type of butt shot, considerate posters would use a content warning and that thing that makes the photo blurry till you click on it.
But I searched this hashtag yesterday and ONLY found donkeys, soooo......🤷♀️
@seachanger@ursaborealis@mivox@inquiline Do I understand this correctly (and I probably don't)? There was a hashtag about donkeys and someone started using it to promote butt pictures? Oh my. 😳😂😂😂
@jkerrison@seachanger@ursaborealis@inquiline More to the point, a hashtag was started as a joke, then aggressively adopted by a particular donkey aficionado, who harasses anyone who uses it for its other incredibly obvious purpose… #asstodon
Okaaaay...
I mean, I'm not invested it but my 2cents is this (dangerous territory, Kerro).
You can't control or buy tags like you can in birdsite, and a million new people have turned up on Mastodon. New neighbours do new things.
But I'd say #LeaveTheDonkeysAlone!
Surely another tag like NSFW is a better butt connector?
Norms here (specifically the humorous use of suggestive tags for innocent content) is why I was initially going to defend the donkeys. Goodwill (particularly his absolute thrashing of it with his obsessive/harassing behavior) is why I ultimately won’t.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
@seachanger@mivox@inquiline
I saw all that. The #asstodon gatekeeper is lucky this didn't happen the day Threads launched and everyone was posting butts here cuz you can't post 'em there!
@seachanger@ursaborealis@inquiline I clicked it today and pretty much only saw your posts and his posts. His “drowning them out” campaign seems effective. 😂
@mivox@seachanger@inquiline
It's also just really interesting since this double entendre goes back hundreds of years if not more. I won't pretend to know the history/etymology, but the character of Bottom in Midsummer Night's Dream is transformed into a donkey! I'd imagine it goes back much much further than that.
That history was explored in detail on the Asstodon hashtag several months ago, so it's interesting to see how people with too much time on their hands are piling on to diss a community hashtag they'd hardly ever heard of till now. #Donkeygate? Please! 🙄
Some people have worked hard to simply provide fun content, well appreciated as a successful and loved Mastodon community. Shame. And all because of a hissy-fit by an attention-seeking academic! Weird.
@seachanger I would never suggest that the #asstodon controversy is actually a donkeykeeper who keeps scolding everyone--including tattling to a user's admin, when user used a frankly polysemous tag on a butt post--& then lashed out at people who commented on the conflict, including at suggestions intended to help mediate it. I would also never suggest that if he hadn't policed the tag so heavily, he wouldn't be demonstrating its vulnerability to cooptation now. Have receipts for all this ofc
