The old dell laptop I now use as a server was in a very sorry state. For whatever reason, Windows (7) was bottlenecked and could only read from the disk at about 2MiB/s, hugely slowing everything down. Installing Linux got me the full speed of the drive.

I'm considering getting an SSD to replace it. If I want to keep my data safe, a 15-year-old 2.5" hard drive probably isn't the place to put it.
I have mutliple backups, besides there. I have an external hard drive, plus BorgBase (which I just fully committed to and paid for today, so now everything's there).
@RL_Dane@benjaminhollon@sirber I was an intern at a small tech company for half a year. They mainly make and host websites. My boss there told me they only have one server with three drives in raid, and one time all three of them broke simultaneously

Well except the battery. That's died, and the time I tried to buy a replacement it also died within a few weeks (no big loss—it was cheap).

The point of having syncthing on a device I'm not ever using is that it's always on, meaning I can use it as an intermediary to sync between two different devices, even when they're not active at the same time.
@benjaminhollon I think chatgpt is like the bitcoin of the LLM world.
The hype and the size & the money they are making from subscriptions will keep it alive for a long time.

I got one from Lazada, which is kinda the Malaysia version of Amazon, and it completely died pretty quick. Not sure I feel up to risking that again, especially since I'm just using it as a server and don't need the battery.

Oh! Now that interests me, coz until several days ago i was also on Fossto [since Nov]. Apart from the galling 500char limit, i had thought i was quite happy there, until the day last week during a chat with another peep who'd recently left Fossto, he pointed out to me that many of my posts almost certainly breached at least two of the CoC clauses, ie, without me realising, i was, in effect, at risk of potentially having my account summarily closed down. So, i changed Instances pretty fast at that point... 😨
@MsDropbear@RL_Dane@benjaminhollon@sirber They booted me for being "difficult" and for not liking religion basically, my first strike was for calling JK Rowling a TERF, the one that got me booted was saying fuck you to someone that implied I deserved to burn in hell forever after death. So it's a decent place, but they don't tolerate non-religious people or people who are not following their dogmas very well.
I'm happy where I am now though, and as a bonus I can post in other languages :)
I was thinking to post here that maybe we've slightly hijacked this thread a teensy little bit via our Fossto tangent... but then i read the entire thread again wrt how much it's evolved since the OP. So, now i see that we're actually in pretty good company wrt tangents... 🤭 😜
