Quite enjoying Ubuntu Budgie. Seems to be a little lighter than stock Ubuntu and with fewer issues? I don't know. I did a full install instead of upgrading in place. Luckily the laptop doesn't hold a lot of files.

@toby1kenobi @gamerchick02 @RL_Dane I use a hybrid approach with Plasma + Tiling Manager plugin. It has some edge cases but allows me to have the best of both worlds. I have it setup so that I can minimize windows into the tray if I want them out of the TM workflow temporarily or i just switch to float and move around. But still have plasma for notifications, tray, etc.

I know we are still in the middle of this thing and some introspection is in order, but I think its important to point out now how well/fast the community is responding. In other circumstances we wouldn't find out about it for 2 months and then it might be fixed in 6. Heads High!

I've been using GNU screen for over 20 years. It's been my go to for terminal multiplexers. I think I can use the word "literally" when I say every time I bring this up someone suggests I move to tmux because it's better. I don't disagree, but man that command prefix (Ctrl-B) is just hard to get used to. I know I can change it in the config, but I'm trying not to so I'm used to how it's default installed. It just doesn't feel intuitive. It's so much more of a stretch to get to.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike I almost exclusively use it to keep a process running on the server if my laptop goes to sleep and kills SSH. Super easy to install and use on a debian. As long as I don't accidentally hit C-c before C-a. 😀

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@tcely @mike Never heard of mosh. I’ll have to look into it. I do use termius occasionally with my iPhone. Luckily I only have my home server to manager these days. I’m glad I no longer have to deal with 20+ machines even with the proper tools.

Ok I'm interested to find out how many of you laptop users that use an encrypted root partition of some description actually use hibernate aka suspend to disk ?
Feel free to leave your reasons for using or not below.

Please boost for a larger response.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@JustineSmithies I have LUKS full disk encryption with btrfs and tpm unlock. I hibernate all the time with rarely an issue. But it’s a very custom setup and it took a while to get it there.

I keep trying to change my map usage over to and there seems to be a new app (@organicmaps) getting traction. I like the app itself so far, but I am still 0/2 with using OSM successfully. 🙁

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

There is literally a car tunnel 200ft below my building with entrances half a mile north and south, but it consistently wants me to take it. Is there an option to turn off digging? 😂

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

For bike routing, it wants me to take a dangerous road when there is a parallel road a block away with a protected bike line. Even Apple Maps gets that one right. I know you can edit places, but not sure how to contribute to navigation. 🤷🏻‍♂️

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@gowin For the tunnel (car) issue, I can turn off tolls (its a tolled tunnel). For the bike routing issue I can add stops along the way to force the roads I want to take. The only problem so far with that and @organicmaps is that it would be nice to be able to save those routes since they are more time consuming to create than just point to point. I imaging biking routing is hard because the most direct route road-wise isn't necessary the one that you want to use a bike for.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@gowin In this case there are two parallel roads. Once is a very busy two lane, two way, uneven road with a sidewalk that will either be non-existent or too crowded with pedestrians for the 8 blocks I have to bike. While the other road has a two-way completely protected bike like (that does show up on the map). Its one extra block over distance wise, but it is certainly the best route to take on a bike.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@gowin Maybe there needs to be a weighting of bike lanes from least (non-existent) to most safe (fully protected) and the user can choose how risk adverse they want to be.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@gowin Interesting. I installed OsmAnd. It’s a little laggy and it also has the same issue with the car/tunnel navigation, but the bike route was exactly what I would have expected.

When you decide to use a Roomba to clean instead of putting the effort in yourself...

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mundon @RL_Dane I have an old Mint/Brava. They have Ni-Cad <?> style batteries and have problems if they aren't charged just right. I found leaving them to die before a full charge extends the life. I also buy replacements on Amazon/Ebay pretty cheap. I'd check the battery type and see if there are any tricks to "resetting" it first.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mundon @RL_Dane Right there with ya! But I don't want the newer "send my personal data to the mother-ship" ones and certainly not at the prices they charge...even if I have to start crawling through junk-yards for parts. 😆

One concern: does Windows still believe it owns both drives? How do I know it won't ever write there?

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@cheribaker @peterdrake When you say Linux drive, do you mean the linux root partition? Is it formated ext4? Its been a while, so I don't remember how, but yes, keeping windows from "mounting" that drive is safest. From my recollection, win usually ignores anything not NTFS or FAT. If you have a separate EFI (FAT) partition for linux in addition to the one windows is using then that one might show up and I would definitely try and "hide" that one from windows. But normally, the EFI is shared.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@peterdrake @cheribaker Ah. If you have the two OSs isolated to two different drives you are "probably" ok. Windows will tend not to mess with other drives (but not always). If you did the default install of ubuntu then you are probably using ext4. Window my show that the drive exists, but is unlikely to touch it. You can hide it to be safe though. I quick search came of with this (https://www.thewindowsclub.com/show-hide-a-drive-in-windows). I assume then you select which one you boot to through the BIOS (F12ish)?

@JoeRess Amolith is right 😄

YouTube explicitly states that ad blockers are not allowed. Therefore, if you use an ad blocker to circumvent ads, that is unauthorised use of someone else’s work - the literal definition of piracy.

It eliminates the display of that ad, thus removing any potential revenue from that ad (however small) for the producer.

to bring it closer to home: if I find a way to obtain your patron-only audio without paying, that is also piracy. that affects your revenue.

patbak,
@patbak@fosstodon.org avatar

@killyourfm @JoeRess The problem is this isn’t a one-way street. I primarily block ads on my browser because they are often not benign. Either violating my privacy by taking my information or worse.

    I've seen a bare handful of posts which are favourable about the coronation event. Far more have been (rightfully, IMHO) critical, with a focus on cost, and on the detention of protestors using dangerous new police powers.

    I wonder how history will recall this event. The gilded pomp and circumstance in the face of food banks, unmaintained roads, and detention of critics?
