hankg,

It seems clear to me that the tech press, even those friendly to decentralization, are only interested in Threads, Bluesky, and whatever new idea some other VC fund or billionaire come up with. Mastodon and AP are mentioned in passing if at all. That's unfortunate. It's not just a chasing the money thing because it's the likes of people who have proven not to succumb to that, I'm not naming names. We on the D* and AP side of the fediverse, or social web as I have heard people call it recently, can still go about our business improving things incrementally and doing what we've always done. If another wave comes and we catch it fine. The tech press and pundits, even fediverse friendly ones, have sadly moved on. Ironically most of the articles I see on why they like Bluesky more than Mastodon, the rest of the fediverse doesn't get recognized at all ever and never has by these same people again except maybe in passing, are reasons why I haven't liked my Bluesky experience (which I've thankfully integrated into the Friendica part of the fediverse I reside in thanks to its bridge). But anyway...back to incremental improvement and growth and doing our own thing with the "normies" not considering us a valid option for the time being again.

shelenn,

All valid points above... but I want to chime in a thought not touched. All VC Tech Bros launch platforms and services driven by a 5 year exit plan. Their goals have nothing to do with creating something good or sustainable. Their goals have to do with creating something with valuation in mind so they make a killing handing it off to someone else, i.e. Twitter and more. They don't care about anything else.

@hankg yep I think it is the age-old issue of there is no financial force driving PR etc for pure open source and decentralised projects. VC funds want to ensure their investments succeed, and I think they also help drive their own projects...

@hankg @osnews and I are definitely on the Fedi side. Threads and BlueSky are traps.

hankg,

@osnews @thomholwerda The people behind both, financially and otherwise, are the exact same people that gave us the calamity of modern social media and tried the exact same market monopoly move with web3/crypto (which I despise for other reasons but that’s a segue). They even sold the latter with the same decentralization and egalitarianism marketing shtick. I’ll be damned if I trust my social media presence to them again. To quote The Wire: “Fuck me once, shame on you. Fuck me twice, shame on me.”

@hankg you’re either up early or haven’t gone to bed yet

hankg,

@mjromano Up early to catch a flight :)
