Running today was – in parts – pure torture. Very cold to begin with (below -10 degrees Celsius) and a relentless wind stinging all the time. When I came home my fingers were numb despite the thicker gloves I wear under such circumstances, my face was reddened and stung like hell from the frosty wind. But I had a good 130 minutes of Patrick Rothfuss‘s THE NAME OF THE WIND, so nothing of the above mattered that much. #Running#applewatchultra2#audiobooks#winter
@sebastianhahn@mlawton It sure can. Good gloves are important, but at a certain point, you may also want mittens (ideally with wind-breaking fabric) that go over the gloves. And something to cover your face like a neck gator. The day this photo was taken, I had my running gloves, my outdoor gloves, and mittens on top of them. You also learn to breathe in through your mouth and (when you can) out through your nose to keep it warm. Mind you, the day this was taken, it was -42°C windchill.
@sebastianhahn@mlawton Oh no. Not remotely. At those temperatures exposed skin can freeze in minutes. I would have been in running tights and jogging pants, and two pairs of socks.
@WTL@mlawton I‘d have taken a mobile heating station with me… But I‘ve NEVER felt anything below ~-20 degrees Celsius. And, to be truthful, I don‘t want to ever!
@sebastianhahn@WTL we're all in agreement that hot weather running is the worst.
I love cold weather running, but it's all relative. In SW Virginia, it rarely gets below freezing and when it does, it doesn't often get below 0°F/-17°C. Whether I would still love it is unknown, but I suspect I would enjoy the novelty.
@sebastianhahn@WTL@mlawton I ran in -35ºC in Canmore, Alberta on a number of occasions a couple of years back. It was pretty cold. Not awful. But cold. Thankfully there was little wind.
@jameskoole@sebastianhahn@WTL@mlawton -20 ºC this morning, took this picture right after my morning run when I was melted down for a minute. It will most probably get colder here in Finland. Not very pleasant running temperature, it hits on your breath and face.
@jameskoole@sebastianhahn@WTL@mlawton The coldest and longest I’ve ran is in almost -30, half marathon around the lake. Both my sides got pretty frozen and hurt for days.

@rolle@jameskoole@WTL@mlawton That run was such a fun experience for everyone except me. I had never run before. When the start signal was sounded, I took off like a madman. You can easily guess where I ended up within 5 minutes: At the back of the pack. And there I stayed for the whole race. Nevertheless it was an inspiration that led to more than one circle around the earth (currently 46,900 kms since November of 2016).
I think the thing we can take from this thread is that runners will run in whatever conditions they want to. And sometimes a bit more than they want to. 🤣

@s1m0n4@fo@sebastianhahn@mlawton Great question. In those conditions, I wore the same Merrell trail shoes I wore all the time, except with two layers of socks. Feet were cool but not cold.
@WTL@fo@sebastianhahn@mlawton thank you for answering. Aren't 2 layers of socks uncomfortable when running? Or do you buy directly a larger pair of shoes for the winter season?
@s1m0n4@sebastianhahn@fo@mlawton They don’t for long. I keep my phone in the inner most layers, where it will stay warmest. The cold nukes the battery fast when it’s in open air.
@bomkatt@WTL My trick is to get to halfway, after that point it’d be the same distance if I just turned around and ran back… Alas, it was a run that made me long for a treadmill in a warm room…
