Been thinking of making a post like this for some time, apologies if some of this is not completely relevant: this community seems more like it’s about Reddit the platform/product than Reddit the social “thing”, but I’m sure a lot of people have similar experiences to mine. Maybe on some instances more than others....
Looking back now that it’s been almost a year, it feels like not a ton has changed for me with Lemmy specifically. I’m still generally not interested in the global feed (I wasn’t often with Reddit’s either) and mostly just poke around it in from time to time to see if my home instance has a community I should be contributing to. !games is solid and probably the most “Reddit-like” out of the communities I follow. I’m still trying to help grow a couple smaller ones, but I guess at least it’s good that there’s still activity after a year?
The other places I’ve tried have been more interesting, in both good and bad ways. I first started in the Fediverse with Kbin, and it’s far worse than it was a year ago. Squabbles seemed interesting for a little while until it got gross, and Tildes wasn’t for me. I’m still getting my feet wet with Mastodon after finally giving up on Bluesky, and I’ve completely left Twitter behind. Leaving there feels good, but the best thing the exodus did for me was push me more into Discord. I’m very active there and joined on as a mod for my favorite server. I’ve started using the platform professionally as well.
Unfortunately, after recently discovering Revanced can patch Sync (my previous favorite Reddit app) into functionality again, I’ve been on Reddit a little bit more. I still haven’t contributed posts or comments since I left, but sometimes I’ll have to go on as part of my Discord duties. It also really doesn’t help that NSFW Reddit is indispensable. A year later, I haven’t found anything that comes close in that aspect.
I can't see your reply on my instance, @tal (currently 1 day ago, still not federated) so not sure if you will see this (or if you do, if I'll see your 2nd reply...). EDIT: I forgot the first @ when I first posted, so I don't know if it actually worked as a mention
One was kicked off by someone generating polygonal-style art
It's visually striking (if you don't look too closely), the 1st bonus image is best but I'd still go with a more minimal style. That and aside from hallucination, I would prefer live-rendered polygons. Infinite scalability is the point.
Here's something I made a while ago, animated eye (note: on my end, Imgur links don't work unless viewed in private mode for whatever reason) though a full game with that style is not currently viable for me for multiple reasons (the feature is 4.X only and still an unmerged PR that may not perform well enough for common use, no Nim-lang bindings yet in 4.X).
Carrier Command 2?
I was confused at first, that style of 3D polygonal isn't really uncommon. I don't really buy things (esp not $30 level) and I need a hobby so that's a part of it too*. For 3D art I've done, one of my threads is federated to your instance. Here's the stuff that didn't (these have no textures, only vertex colors):
The fediverse looks a lot different from a lemmy server than it does from Kbin, fyi. There’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t get federated properly or in a reasonable time period, leading to fewer visible posts and discussions that look a lot emptier than they actually are.
Same. I'm looking around at the KBin instance and it's in bad shape, some of the communities are in. The admin is MIA due to IRL issues with health so he can't be around to help. Moderators are abandoning already weakened communities that are now stuffed with bots and spam content.
The only real lively community is over in Lemmy's instances. But, the Fediverse still yet has a long ways to go, it needs more maturity as an alternative and needs more time to gather membership that'll hopefully be comparable to reddit's but not in quantity but quality.
Yea it’s really about what people have as the mental model for the platform they are on. It might take time for people to internalize what the network is doing.
Mastodon and Lemmy do mix as it is, but it could be better. Two big areas I’ve heard are
Lemmy users need the ability to follow mastodon users (kbin has this I believe)
Mastodon users have a hard time following Lemmy communities and seeing posts, because they end up getting a waterfall of every post/comment at once overwhelming their feeds
Part of it is that we don’t federate that nicely to the rest of the fediverse yet
I mean, kinda? But it federates well enough I would say. I regularly see Mastodon or kbin users and I feel it’s not fair to those users to refer to the spaces on Lemmy instances as “lemmy”. And as you note, it’s short sighted - Lemmy might not be around in 10 years and some other implementation might take over.
But tbf I’m not sure exactly what the federation problems are right now. I’m not sure how Lemmy could federate better (if at all).
This is part of the reason I went with feddit.dk and not lemmy.dk.
I’m having to register to Lemmy directly now, when I’m used to posting from KBin’s instance. But now the errors is getting so bothersome that I can’t even surf around currently on it. The 50x error comes up after everytime I post somewhere, like make a thread....
I unsubscribed from kbin for that exact reason a bit earlier. I‘m sad the platform is suffering and the person taking care of it is overwhelmed.
It does show the fundamental flaw of foss software. People should really donate even small amounts to these platforms so they can afford more dev time.
I feel like this needs to be addressed soon in general, not only in this case.
I’m sorry, but this sounds… you are aware you’re asking people to run a social network just so you’re not inconvenienced, right and why would the developer just relinquish control of their flagship to appease you?
I just don’t understand how you got there ahead of finding another kbin instance, switching to mbin? Switching to Lemmy?
I have to unsubscribe from some of kbin’s magazines because bots constantly posting spam there in past few months. It’s bad. I didn’t know the dev runs double duty as mod as well.
I know there was an issue not long ago where Sopuli had to defederate from kbin for awhile. Kbin had a federation bug that was endlessly spamming federation updates and it was causing Sopuli to fall behind on federation.
Mbin had a fix up pretty quick, but several attempts to reach the Kbin admin all failed.
Here is a list of mbin instances: https://fedidb.org/software/mbin
We do not really have a "flagship" instance, as we saw that it created a bunch of problems for kbin having one
I still have hope for Kbin. And I prefer its interface. My primary worry is more that the next major influx into the Fediverse will happen while Kbin is stalled, rather than that the stall will endure indefinitely.
As long as Ernest says things are ongoing, I’m willing to believe him. o7
My, perhaps #controversial, #hottake is that I prefer idly browsing #4chan now to #Reddit. For as crude as it is, 4chan is at least human in a way that Reddit just isn't anymore. 4chan is vulgar and crass but vibrant. Reddit is full of people that appear to just #seethe online all day, regardless of their political leanings. Eternally hurling insults from afar for the approval of fellow defeated seethers and bots.
It's been around a year since a lot of us quit Reddit, myself included. I'm happy with Lemmy, but I still feel a bit lost online since leaving the old site. Discussion?
