There's a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we've seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would....
I'm out. I haven't left for good yet. The time I spend there now is to tell other people about kbin and similar sites. But Kbin is now my main site, and I won't use reddit for anything other than to move more people here.
So I went and checked out several instances, including Kbin. It seems that some of them can't even find our community when searching for it directly using the Community Finder, and our posts don't pop up in their feeds....
Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...
Interesting. Do you think there will be steps to make communities more focused? Like a hypothetical deal where lemmyworld will give up "gaming" if kbin gives up "technology"?
people posting here are going out of their way to post -- and it feels like every thought has more weight or sanctity or meaning when it's being posted here, at the dawn of a new era and the fall of an old....
As some subreddits continue blackouts to protest Reddit's plans to charge high prices for its API, Reddit has informed the moderators of those subreddits that it has plans to replace resistant moderation teams to keep spaces "open and accessible to users."
Their handling of this situation has been piss poor. It feels like every step along the way, from the initial announcement about API pricing to his awful Reddit AMA where he replied 12 times and then fled, it's been a terrible look.
I'm hoping more people see alternates like kbin and give them a go.
I really thought I’d have trouble moving on from Apollo. I do still fully support Christen so have stopped using Reddit on blackout day one. Between Lemmy and kbin I’ve been getting my fix scrolling for info. While it’s not perfect, it’s getting there and I like the federation aspect. So FU u/spez
really? i was part of the biggest wrestling forum on the planet and that's gone, possibly for good. that's a big deal for a niche interest but everyone i've seen or interacted with is fine migrating to discord and the kbin. the only issue is what to do about the archive.
I think the easiest way to explain mastodon vs kbin is to compare mastodon to lemmy. (At least, this is how I look at it)
Mastodon looks at the world through time-based history of what people post. The topic, or how many likes/upvotes does not matter so much as the time. Though replies to other posts are grouped together. This is how twitter behaves.
Lemmy looks at the world through posts made about a topic. The time posted does not matter as much as the topic. Replies are called grouped under the posts by people in a tree structure. While how many upvotes usually factors into how the replies are ordered, there are multiple options on how things are ordered. This is how reddit behaves.
Kbin can look at the world in two ways, with "Threads" being a topic based one and "Microblogs" being time based. As they (mastodon, kbin and lemmy) speak the same 'language' you can load and interact with content across the software, just it will present it in the way the particular software thinks about the world.
It has gaps in communities, and is not completely federated for all instances, but if you click on the Magazines button at the top (desktop view) or click on this link:
Then you can search from there. You will see other instances come up in the search result. It feels cludgy, not because of kbin, but I think mostly how federation between other instances goes. But I suspect that will improve with time.
I believe that the numbers that show on kbin are the number of kbin users that are subscribed vs on lemmyverse, its the number of subscribers on that (home) instance.
And lemmyverse is behind the real number because it syncs every x minutes.
Yes that works fine for me but what I mean is I would search "photography" and only relevant magazines from kbin would be listed, not anything from Lemmy instances.
But others have answered my question in the comments here so thank you all.

It has nothing to do with the EU. It's a private foundation. They used to own one of Europe's first big ISPs. They sold it and the money is now used to fund projects like kbin. See https://nlnet.nl/foundation/
They do absolutely great work. I did a project for them a long time ago (hi Michiel Leenaars!)
I really think #Kbin and #Pixelfed will and should work really well together.
For the memes. and I mean that!
Imagine following a meme subreddit -- directly! -- from your Instagram account, or an Instagram meme page -- directly! -- from Reddit, and not by a reposter account.
Now with the Fediverse (and the #Threadiverse), this is reality.
Long live the Fediverse, and long live the Threadiverse!
Given how quickly Beehaw reacted to external users, it's becoming more important for users to know "where" they are engaging with content, meaning "where the content was federate in from"....
this one also shows a distinction for kbin users, which I thought would be helpful for Lemmy users because the functionality of how the sites work is just different enough that not realizing someone you're replying to is using a different platform can and has been causing all kinds of confusion.
#Lemmy now has 135,369 accounts. That is tracking with my expectations.
But while #Kbin had ~7,000 accounts yesterday, it’s just shot up to 30,930 accounts today.
While Lemmy is the 5th most used server software on the Fediverse, Kbin is now in 10th place and it’s growing at a faster rate than Lemmy.
A few days ago, I predicted that the #RedditMigration would result in 150,000-300,000 new accounts being created on the Fediverse. That expectation has already been met.
This #RedditMigration is fundamentally changing the course of the Fediverse. It’s moved the Fediverse from being primarily about microblogging to having more eclectic use cases.
While the #TwitterMigration validated that decentralized social media can appeal to millions of people, the #RedditMigration has validated that decentralized social media has man varied applications – both in the software and use case sense.
@atomicpoet@adrianco watch out on the stats here, Lemmy and/or kbin has been, iirc, reporting the total number of User records as it's user count, not just the local user accounts, but also all the federated accounts, so each shows up as having thousands of users when they do not in fact have such.
Up until now most of my research had said that kbin was basically Lemmy, but different. After some more research and looking through other comments you are definitely correct.
I know lots of us have other favourite artists, and eagerly await their new releases, so I thought it might be cool to have a place to celebrate those too....
Additionally does anyone have any recommendations of cool people and organizations to follow on Mastodon? I am literally open to any and all ideas and representations (I wish to expand my understanding as well as open my mind to views that oppose my own proclivities).
Noticing some people levying that against people bringing up complaints about their experience here. It's not the spirit which I hope will prevail. Also, lazy cop out in a discussion.
so you can tell where something is coming from by checking the full @/name. you can see this in the sidebar for magazines, or hovering over someone's name to see for the users. there's userscripts to show it automatically and I think it's planned to have an official option to do so.
What makes federated threads show up here on kbin?
By default, we can access every other federated instance. However, it might not show up if someone isn't subscribed to the person or magazine. Threads for magazines should be 100% in sync across instances (though sometimes things are a bit finnicky due to the influx of users).
Are there any that don't?
Content from other instances won't show up here if:
it's not part of what the collective kbinauts have subscribed to (if we subscribe to another instance's magazine, it pulls in that content for everyone here.)
if another instance decides to block or "defederate" with us. as of now I think every instance is federating with kbin.social so this shouldn't be an issue.
if you mark that you don't wish to see federated content. this will only show you stuff from kbin.social.
I think the issue is that everyone's so focused on seeing Lemmy as a "notReddit" that they outright get pissed when it doesn't work the way they think it should (like Reddit except the parts they think are bad)
Lemmy (and kbin, and other similar platforms) and Reddit have the same niche, but they're not the same thing
After Reddit's beyond-arrogant CEO dismissed the subreddit blackout as just posturing, moderators of discussions extended the blackout. This is the only sensible response to the company's contempt.
@norcalpm@dangillmor@supernovae I'm still fediverse illiterate. Is my understanding correct that kbin instances are in their own little universe? That is, it has nothing to do with Mastodon instances?
Curious, if you were/are a Reddit user, will you be leaving the platform for good or have you already? CEO has called unpaid moderators' concerns "noise", that will be "passing soon."

Interesting bit of news for the threadiverse. All three of these are fairly large lemmy instances
