Last night's Oscars saw a sweep by "Oppenheimer," a surprise win for Emma Stone, a new record for Billie Eilish, and a near-naked John Cena. Here's our @Flipboard Storyboard to wrap things up.
And they're off! Follow Vanity Fair's live blog for witty, up-to-the-minute coverage of what's happening at the Oscars, or our Oscars Magazine for articles about everything.
@trusttrist We sure will! We have a federated Magazine devoted to it, where you can keep up on everything about the red carpet, performances and so on — here's the link. On this account, we'll share highlights, big winners, key moments etc.
We’re not expecting many surprises at this Sunday’s Oscars ceremony — if “Oppenheimer” doesn’t win Best Picture, we’ll eat Oppy’s fedora hat, and when it comes to the two main contenders for Best Actress, we think Gladstone has the edge over Stone (though they both rock). Far more interesting to us are the stories around the edges. Here's our blogpost, with stories from @TheConversationUS@hollywoodreporter@variety_feed, Entertainment Weekly and more, plus an incredible video from The Academy about how the special effects from nominated movies were put together.
John Williams is among 19 new members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The 92-year-old composer has won five of the 53 Oscars he was nominated for, and also conducted the Boston Pops for more than a decade and has composed classical concertos. Here's a story from ABC on Williams and the other 18 inductees to the Academy of Arts this year, which included composer Terence Blanchard, novelist Alice McDermott and artist Matthew Barney. We want to know, which is your favorite of these (some answers are movies and others are franchises where more appropriate).
A plurality of our poll voters say "Star Wars" is their favorite John Williams score, with "Indiana Jones" and "Jurassic Park" coming second and third. Some beloved movies we omitted from the poll include "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Harry Potter." @retrosponge made the point that the "Jaws" theme is so ingrained that we still understand cultural references to it 50 years later. And indeed, our kids — far too young to have watched the movie — say "dun dun... dun dun" for references to sharks and/or scary things. Williams is up for yet another Oscar at this year's ceremony for his "Indiana Jones" score. Here's a story from @TheConversationUS about his amazing career.
There are just a few weeks to go until the Oscars ceremony. In preparation, @RollingStone has ranked the Best Picture winners of the past 20 years. We reckon no one will be surprised at the bottom two (both heavy-handed, simplistic takes on racism in America) but which do you think they said was No. 1? https://flip.it/Qh89WY
