Holy fuck I have just discovered that the phone app in Android 13 [EDIT: no; see below] vibrates when an outgoing call connects

An outgoing call

There is no way to turn this off except to disable all vibration on your phone

So you make a phone call, you put it up to your ear, and then this thing that you've put up to the side of your face vibrates intensely. It is the most deeply unpleasant, unnecessary thing. I already knew I was making a fucking phone call I pressed the button

@mcc Most service providers have some sort of menu you can access. It occasionally has some really basic settings for various things such as enabling/disabling VoLTE and etc. Sometimes it might have a few settings related to such modifications they have made for at least simple things like that vibrate on connect "feature." Usually accessible by dialing some special combination like # or somesuch. You would have to look it up based on the branded device itself.

Thoughts: Going means a lot of wrangling the posteriors to get the info you want. A crucial skills I'm still learning, but invaluable.

There was a 1950s radio drama show called X-Minus One that adapted stories from a science fiction magazine. There’s a comedic one that is a surprising critique of capitalism in 1950s America called “Snowball Effect” [spoilers ahead] about an economics professor who comes up with a formula for unlimited growth and tests it out on a small women’s organization in a small town in Wisconsin. It starts working too rapidly, but he has built a flaw into the formula where the organization will quickly collapse if they stop getting new members. But it becomes so successful that the organization takes over the world. At the end of the episode, the world leader (who started as the president of the organization in the tiny Wisconsin town) announces that they are landing the first people on Mars to look for Martians because they desperately needed new members.

It's kind of wild how "Heroes" has become maybe Bowie's best know song.
It was certainly not at the time, it didn't even chart.

I just looked it up and he had a ton of singles on the U.S. charts, even "TVC15" made it to , "Heroes" didn't even crack 100.

1/4 A Pile, To Be Sorted by @spinkdinky (Chris McCully) combines a visualization of life's complexity with a metaphorical pursuit of clarity into captivating, vibrant, abstract pieces of art.

The artist dedicated it to his father and, in doing so, paid tribute to a piece of advice that he gave: To tackle life's challenges one small step at a time.

This is a photo from a lunar transit of the space station a few years ago. I had another telescope setup to take a video of the pass, and here’s a composite of the frames it took (the whole thing lasted less than a second).

I really enjoy the scale of this image, with the ISS being 540km away, and the moon some 380,000km in the background. more detailed info on the ISS Transit ISS transit can be found here courtesy of transit-finder. Captured on the morning of June 24, 2019 about 30 minutes after sunrise.

Equipment:

  • Meade ETX125-EC
  • AW 71" Camera Tripod
  • Canon Rebel T3i (astro-modified)
  • Meade adapter

Acquisition:

  • 1/800" at ISO 800 single exposure

Capture:

  • I just held down the shutter button a second before the ISS pass occurred, and got 3 frames containing the ISS

Processing:

  • AutoColor and Levels adjustments in Photoshop
  • MLT noise reduction and annotation in PixInsight
