Should search on the Fediverse be opt-in or opt-out?

Google doesn't care if you want search to be opt-in.

The difference between 'privacy' and 'obscurity'.

ATOMICPOET: "[some] people believe their posts [on the Fediverse] aren't discoverable because when you do a search for them on Mastodon you can't find them." "But — here's the problem. Google still indexes those posts. And people really only discover that — really after the fact, right? I've had a number of people talk to me and they've said to me — "hey can you remove stuff from your server because Google is indexing that stuff", right?" "And — this is a problem with the Fediverse. The Fediverse exists It exists because — well, federation means you're copying stuff from one server to another server, right?" "And if you've opted to — there's different levels of visibility on the Fediverse, right? So there's obviously "direct", in which you send a message and only one person — the person you tag — actually only the people you tag see those messages. Those are, those are direct visibility. The next one is "followers only" — So only people who follow you can see your posts, right?Okay. And then there is "unlisted" where you don't have to be a follower to see a post, but it does not show up in public timelines. Okay. " Now, so far so good — the final rung of visibility is "public", right? I've had a lot of people send public posts on the Fediverse and they believe that they're not being indexed. But unfortunately they are. And you know, it's hard to explain to these people, to a lot of people how, you know — simply how privacy works because — I get the sense quite ..."

@dameoutlaw

Sort of 🙂

I am starting to put up clips from episode 1 that we recorded last week.

I still need to create an account for , and put the full episodes on it.

And need to do more clips from episode 1. And then do the same (creating clips) for episode 2, which was recorded yesterday.

Should probably create a separate "clips" account, too.

Weird — I thought I added the alt-text to this video. But it doesn't look like it was there. Just added it.

...

The other 2 clips that I have posted so far have alt-text.

https://mastodon.social/@reiver/111274120048099033

Although when the video is longer (like the 2nd of those 2 URLs) I cannot add the whole alt-text. But have to truncate it. (Which is unfortunate.)

Myself and @atomicpoet just did a trial-run of the 1st episode of our new video podcast.

We covered a lot of interesting topics about the Fediverse.

It went on for about 2½ hours 🙂

...

I think, after we record it —

In addition to just releasing the whole video as is —

We should also make some smaller clips (i.e., excerpts) from the larger video. That focus on just one small part of the conversation.

To help make it easier to digest.

Hey there, wonderful folks! Guess what? @reiver and I are thinking about starting a podcast, all about the fascinating world of the Fediverse. Super exciting, right?

Now here's where you come in: we would absolutely love to hear what topics about the or social media tickle your curiosity. Maybe you're wondering about its inner workings, or perhaps you're keen on exploring some other intriguing aspects. Whatever it may be, please do share your thoughts and comment below. Your input is truly valuable!

Sending out lots of love and appreciation to all of you!

Just for context - Dyspraxic Brit in the UK.

Firefish + Mastodon in one podcast? There may be Snarkasm ahead.

Firstly I would recommend you have transcripts available for the Hearing Impaired.

I would be interested in a magazine style thing, Fedi works best in short bursts.

What could work as weekly sections:

"Clash Of The Software"
Different perspectives on how different software tackles different issues.

"Now You See Me, Now You Don't"
The eternal mysteries of federation.

"Last Week on The Admins..."
The Soap Operas of Admin rivalries.

"The Fediblock Files"
The mysteries of FediBlock.

"Meme Of The Week" / "(Themed) Meme Of The Week".

"Etiquette & Fedilosophy"
CWs to CCs and beyond.
Bad habits / actors from Anti-Social-Media / CrossPlatformers.
Links to PayWalled / LoginOnly / LocalAccessOnly Websites.

"Passive Aggressive QTing".

"Cross Posting"
Poster's Regret and the wonders of Edit or Delete / Redo, or not.
CrossPlatform Posting - for, against, why don't they just edit for the Fedi?

"Country-Centricity"
Especially Americans saying here / this country not USA and TrumpBombing everybody without CWs.

"The Art Of Using Filters"

"Mute, Block, Report"

"Fedicentricity"
Quirks of the users of each software.

"Top Insighting Without Due Care Or Attention"
Sooo many possibilities.

"The State Of The Platforms"
What's working / not, trends etc.
